One of the earliestintendencies of its kind was established at Mount Auburn Seminary in 1892. That same year, a group of men from Carroll County formed the “West Carrollton Rifle Club” with the goal of promoting physical education and improving rifle skills. The club met on Saturday mornings at local carriages drawn by horses simulcasting meetings held at Mount Auburn Seminary. Over time, other organizations were founded within West Carrollton – including the “Carroll County Rifle Association” in 1912 and the “West Carrollton Pistol Club” in 1916. During World War II, many residents decided they needed firearms for self-defense reasons. As a result, several new gun clubs were formed throughout Ohio including the “Ohio National Guard Armory Shooting Team” in 1942 and the “Ohio Reformed Church Gun Club” two years later. In 1949, both these organizations merged into what is now known as the “West Carrollton Rifle & Pistol Club” which still meets on Saturday mornings at local carriages drawn by horses simulcasting meetings held at Mount Auburn Seminary today.
West Carrollton City, Ohio is a city located in the state of Ohio. The population was 54,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH-NC-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. West Carrollton City was organized on February 25, 1873, when it consolidated with two other towns in Summit County: Bedford and Sparta. At that time, Summit County consisted of nine towns: Athens (the county seat), Bedford Township (southwest of Athens), Bellevue Township (northwest of Bedford), Columbiana Township (northeast of Babylon), Coventry Township (southwest of Columbus), Duncansville Township (southwest of Mentor), and West Carrollton Township (northwest of Athens). The town meeting that created West Carrollton City decided to name it after General James K. Polk because he had been the governor during the American Civil War and had given many speeches before Congress about development in central Ohio. The first settler in what is now West Carrollton City was John Fenton who arrived there on October 12, 1875. He built a cabin on land donated by his brother-in-law Ezekiel Morse. For many years until 1912 there were no schools within walking distance of any inhabitant so learning to read or write was a necessity for most adults until then. In 1912 WCC opened its doors to students with instruction starting in second grade as well as later grades through high school which continues today as WCC University Preparatory School offering pre-Kindergarten through twelveth grade courses along with more than fifty specialties available for pupils ranging from music to business administration/marketing/locketmaking/dentistry etc etc... Today even though WCC doesn’t offer Kindergarten through Twelveth grades anymore we continue our tradition with our beautiful new PreKindergarten classroom addition that will open up this fall into 2019! All told since West Carrollton City became a city it has seen many changes including becoming one of Dayton’s fastest growing suburbs; experiencing rapid annexation by neighboring communities; benefiting from investment and growth brought about by several large businesses such as Rubbermaid, Emerson Electric Company and Northrop Grumman; becoming home to several colleges such as WCC University Preparatory School which offers pre-Kindergarten through Twelveth grade courses along with more than fifty specialties available for pupils ranging from music to business administration/marketing/locketmaking/dentistry etc etc...
