West Carrollton City, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Scioto River near its confluence with the Monongahela River, about 20 miles north-northwest of Cleveland and 35 miles east of Cincinnati. The site for what would become West Carrollton City was selected by members of the Board of Trustees for Scioto County on December 5, 1826 from a group that had been surveyed around that time along both rivers.[1] They named their new community after John Carroll who had served as governor of Virginia from 1785 to 1789 and as secretary to Continental Congress during the ratification process of the United States Constitution (1787-88). Located on high ground overlooking two large river valleys, West Carrollton quickly became a busy commercial center with several brickyards, lumberyards and cotton plantations. In 1836, WCF began purchasing land from individuals and families who had purchased it in parcels dating back to 1795 when Tryon Park was laid out east of town across from today's Oblong Hall shopping mall/museum complex.[2] Today much of this original acreage remains undeveloped but portions have been redeveloped into office space, residential areas and a light industrial park known locally as "The Hub".[3][4] One interesting note about this stretch is that it bisects one side of downtown Cleveland which took over much agricultural land adjacent to downtown between 1853-1857 due to an area boom following colonization by European Americans Of Indian descent; however since then much has taken place withinandarounddowntowncantontoreplacetheagriculturallandwithresidentialandcommercialspace? West Carrollton City was a small town in western Ohio, located just east of the Michigan line. It began as a farming village in 1812, and became a large coal and ironmining community during the 1800s. The town was destroyed by fire in 1911, but was rebuilt and renamed West Carrollton City in 1912. In the 1930s, West Carrollton City experienced significant growth as it became home to three major steel plants: Bethlehem Steel Corporation's blast furnace operations at No. 2; General Motors Corporation's Toledo Works crucible works at No. 3; and American Car & Foundry Company's Lima Works for forging aluminum cans and other products. However, during World War II the city lost its position as an important industrial center due to its proximity to enemy lines. After the war, West Carrollton City declined further and fell into obscurity until it regained some degree of prosperity in the late 1990s through investments from local businesses such as restaurant chains Dave’s Drive-In & Diner and Performance Bakery Incorporated. Although overtaken by larger urban centers such as Cleveland or Buffalo during recent decades, West Carrollton City still retains a strong sense of community identity that has helped it remain prosperous over time.
West Carrollton City was founded on February 17, 1828, by a group of farmers in what is now the town of Carrollton. The original settlers were from Hamilton County and were led by Major George Washington Griffin. The town was named for General John Carroll who fought in the American Revolution. The first post office was established in 1829, and the first store opened in 1830. In 1840, West Carrollton became a city and it had its own police department. In 1870, the city annexed neighboring towns of Bedford Heights and Parkersburg. In 1902, West Carrollton merged with the nearby village of Bedford to form the current town of Bedford Township.
