The history of gun targets in West Carrollton City began with the construction of a local park in the early 1900s. The park was designed to provide an outdoor space for residents of the city to shoot at various targets. The first target that was erected at the park was a black bulldog target. Over time, other target items were added to the park, such as handguns and rifles. In 1924, West Carrollton City company donated two cannons to be used as shooting targets in the park. The first public shooting in West Carrollton City took place in 1892. The city had a gun club and the first person to shoot a rifle was Harry Fenton, who shot an owl at an outdoor game on October 6th of that year.
West Carrollton City, Ohio is a town in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,242 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from West Carroll Township in Fayette County. The first people to live in what is now West Carrollton were Native American and were known as the Shawnee Nation. In 1827, settlers named John Hulbert and his son George founded the community of West Carrollton on land that had been part of the Scioto Valley Indian Reservation. In 1830, Captain John Day opened a mill here and started an industry that would continue until 1918. By 1840, there were over 100 dwellings in West Carrollton and it was home to a school and a post office. A store was built on Main Street in 1845 by James Cockerill and operated for twenty years before being destroyed by fire. On October 15, 1849, residents voted to form their own township under the new government of Cleveland with west Carrollton as its center. In 1870-71, Edwin Poe set up a sawmill near present day Green Bay Road and village became known as Poe Village because he ran it. Today's Poe Mill Complex still stands today (1946) within walking distance of downtownWestcarrolton! There are several historical buildings located within or around Poe Mill Complex including: The Old Post Office building which served as both the Town Hall from 1872-1974 & also housed many local organizations during this time including: The Optimist Club; Ancient Order of Odd Fellows; Masonic Lodge #2; Presbyterian Church #1; First Baptist Church (Congregational); American Legion Post #6 & #7 among others From 1865-1972 there was also an amusement park located east of Main Street called "Poe Park" which is now privately owned property but portions can still be seen remains such as Admission Gate & pony rides! Additionally another complex known locally simply as "The Shop" currently sits adjacent to main square insideahobby mall! This complex housed numerous businesses starting with 8 storefronts plus associated warehouse/office space up through circa 1986 when it closed its doors due to lack of business opportunity! It should be noted that even though most if not all properties within "The Shop" have long since been lost or removed from view they have never stopped generating interest nor has their history stop living on!!!! During prohibition days some buildings inside "The Shop" did see some activity legalistically ;) Although mostly dismantled these remnants still generate curiosity (& sometimes fear) whenapproached....... Located off State Route 6 about 3 miles southwest of downtownWestcarrolton is another significant historic structure actually situated ON Main Street in DowntownWestcarrolton itself - this being former High School Phone Booth Building which serve'd Columbiana County Schools until 2002 when they moved into their present location just east off State Route 6 across from Walmart!! Nowadays it serves mainly function(s) as an Event facility!!!

West Carrollton City was founded on November 15, 1853 by the merger of two small towns in what is now Warren County- Carroll Township and West Bloomfield Township. The new town was named for Captain John Carroll who had been president of the United States during the first decade of the 20th century. The town was incorporated on March 11, 1854. On July 1, 1906, it became a part of Dayton.
West Carrollton City was founded in 1811 by General James K. Polk, who served as the 10th President of the United States. The city was named for Colonel John Carroll, a veteran of the American Revolution and an early settler in nearby Mahoning County. The first Post Office opened in West Carrollton on November 15, 1812. In 1821, the city became a U.S. territory under President James K. Polk and was renamed Washington Territory after President Washington's visit to Ohio that year. On January 3, 1827, West Carrollton Cityurchia became a town within Washington Territory when it passed an act creating what is now Ohio’s 23rd congressional district. On February 22, 1830, the towns of Delaware and Westerville were organized into West Carrollton Township and remained so until their dissolution on March 1, 1915.
