West Carrollton City is a small town in the southern Appalachian Mountains of Ohio. It is located about 20 miles north-northeast of Dayton, and 25 miles southwest of Cincinnati. The town was named for General John Wayne, who had been killed in battle two years earlier. In 1825, West Carrollton became a county seat. West Carrollton City was a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the border of Armstrong County and Fayette County. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. West Carrollton City is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now West Carrollton City were farmers who came from eastern Pennsylvania in 1814. In 1825, they founded the village of Perrysburg on land donated by John Perryman. The first post office was established in 1830; it was called Perrysburg until 1848 when it changed its name to West Carrollton after Mayor James Witherspoon (1820-1888). At some point during the 19th century, a sawmill and lumberyard were built within walking distance of downtown west Carrollton City limits. By 1908, there were two churches and twelve businesses in downtown west Carrollton City - more than any other community in that region at that time. In 1916, voters passed an ordinance making west Carrollton a city with a mayor and city council instead of a township form of government which had been prevalent since before Ohio became a state. On July 15, 1920, citizens voted to rename their town West CarrollTON for then President Woodrow Wilson as part of his centennial celebration celebrations across America. At that time only Armstrong County residents could vote in municipal elections; residents outside Armstrong County (east Fayette Township) could attend meeting but not participate or cast ballots. On November 8th 1926 Columbus Day - three years after Dayton's annexation into Ohio - citizens of both cities erected "W"shaped plaques at Main Street intersections commemorating this event as well as accomplishments dating back to 1814-1920 during the same period when both towns had similar populations numbering just over 1 500 people each due largely to farming activities surrounding schools and farms near their villages/townships/cities while east Fayette Township had just over 2 000 residents total with most residing within its boundaries including portions now known as Cincinnati suburbs like Sylvania Hills & Fairfield Heights etc.). This act also demonstrated how two similarly sized communities amalgamated into one larger municipality through annexation without any spontaneous or unilateral decisions by either community members about where they wanted to merge ornexion occurred; another example highlighting how Dayton's incorporation process worked under state law unlike many local governments wherein Municipalities are created automatically based on population size when no such Population Limits have been set apart from State laws governing municipalities formation
West Carrollton City was founded in 1827 by James M. West and his wife, Maria. The city was named for the west bank of the Cuyahoga River which at that time extended from Cleveland to Lake Erie. In 1841, the city annexed adjacent Medina Township. In 1865, West Carrollton City became a part of the newly formed Cleveland Municipal District and in 1868 it lost its status as a municipal district when it merged with other municipalities in Cleveland chronicling its growth on an integrated map including Dayton, Cincinnati and Akron.
