West Carrollton City is a city in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–area Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what would become West Carrollton City was made on May 18, 1795 by Captain Anthony Wayne and his wife Rachelle as part of the Miami Purchase from the French. The city was named for General John Carroll who had led American forces against British troops at Saratoga in 1777 and Yorktown in 1781. A post office called West Carrollton was established in 1801, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. On November 3, 1811, Indian Chief Shawnee attacked and burned down a white settler's cabin near present-day downtown West Carrollton City. The settler's son William Ford responded with shots that killed Chief Shawnee and three other Indians. This event forever marked the beginning of organized white settlement within what would become West Carrollton City limits. In 1814, President James Kettlesford appointed Elijah Hicks to survey land east of Dayton along the Cincinnati Road which he believed could be used as farmland for African Americans raisers undercutting white farmers during the gold rush era known as "The Great Western Migration." Hicks' survey found that this area became known as Dogwood Hills after dogwoods (Rhamnus lanatus) growing thereabouts were noted for their resilience to blighted environments throughout much of North America during this time period; witness California's giant redwoods today! In 1819, Hicks sold this land to Major George Stephenson for $5 per acre ($ when measured against current prices). Upon Stephenson's death without children to succeed him, his widow took control of Dogwood Hills and started development thereon into one of Dayton's most prosperous neighborhoods! She renamed it "West Carrollton" after her late husband's birthplace! It wasn't until 1840 that west side streets were laid out around central business district including Elm Street now known as State Streets NW & Decatur Streets NE; these early streets are indicative of how commercial activity would soon thrive within what would become known as "the town". On February 12th that same year a public school was dedicated on Elm Street corner State Street NW & Decatur Streets NE by Mayor Augustus Kelley with Mrs. Stephenson present! That very same year saw construction begin on First Baptist Church located just southwest corner State Street NW & Elm Streets NE – today’s First Baptist Cathedral! Many other civic improvements followed over ensuing years including: a water system constructed 1865 (still extant), sewer line laid out1868 (now Copley Avenue), German School built 1870 (now Chaminade High School), library built 1889 (currently Weisman Library/Purdue University East Campus), baseball diamond erected 1897 (today’s Recreation Fieldhouse)…the list goes on!! Today’s skyline can be seen from almost every address within reach thanks to numerous updates + expansions effected over time!!! Dogwood Hills neighborhood contains some beautiful dogwoods still standing today such as Rhamnus lanatus!
