West Carrollton City is a city in the northwestern corner of Ohio, United States. The population was 9,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located within Muskingum County. The name "Carrollton" was given to it by General George Washington in 1790 during his campaigns through eastern Ohio. The first area that West Carrollton City came into contact with was directly east of present-day downtown, whereen Indian traders and fur traders had settlements since the pre-Columbian era. One such trader, John Hennigan, founded a trading post at what is now called Hennigan's Ford in 1796. In 1802, James Ketchum moved his family from Delaware Township to become the first white settler in what would later be West Carrollton City. Ketchum built a log cabin on land that he donated near present-day Wintersville Road and Main Street. He named his new settlement "Carrollton." In 1806, John Auld bought 5 acres (20 hectares) of land from Ketchum for $100 ($ today). This parcel would become known as Auldtowne because it housed most of the town's early settlers until 1830 when it became part of larger West Carrollton City proper. From this initial site grew both business and residential development throughout much of Medina County until western Muskingum County seceded from Ohio in 1870 due to political reasons related to industrial growth in nearby Akron (then northeastern Indiana). By 1840, there were over 100 people living in Carroltowne including several churches and two schools - one taught reading aloud to children while they worked on their farms; another school served as an academy for young girls learning skills such as spinning and weaving before marriage or starting their own families. West Carrollton City was founded in 1831 as the town of Carroll Township. It was named after General James Callico, who fought in the American Revolution and was a signer of the Northwest Ordinance. In 1836, the township became part of Scioto County and then Ohio Territory. The first post office in West Carrollton opened in 1837. On May 10, 1840, West Carrollton became a city under the government of Ohio Territory. On December 12, 1850, it merged with neighboring town of East Carrollton to form a new city known today as West Carrollton City. The growth of West Carrollton City was mainly due to its location at the junction of two major trails that connected Cincinnati with points west: The National Road (now US-6) and the Erie Canal. The city also benefited from its status as a manufacturing center due to its production of bricks, flour and tobacco products. West Carrollton City was organized in 1868 as a result of the merger of two earlier towns, West Chester and Carroll Township. The city was named for General John A. Carroll, who served as an American Volunteer Cavalry officer during the Mexican-American War. The first mayor and aldermen were elected in 1869. The city took its name from General Carroll and his wife, also named Ann.
