The Washington Court House story begins on October 14, 1824 when General George Washington set out on his way to take part in the Second Seminole War. Heading northeast along present day Capital Avenue, he arrived at what would be known as Athens soon after sunset on October 12th. At that time Athens lay within the territorial limits of West Virginia and no law or government could exist there without Washington's signature or approval; this presents an interesting legal challenge for future presidents who might travel down that road during wartime occasions such as this one. In order to prove his allegiance to West Virginia and ensure compliance with its laws he stopped at Oneida Lake where he viewed the construction of Fort Harrison (later known as Yorktown). In response to news spread throughout western Virginias about this event President James Kapp made the trip upriver and signed an executive order authorizing completion of Fort Harrison just outside present day Cincinnati approximately four days later on October 16th following His Excellency's arrival in Athens via boat from Mount Vernon.. Upon arriving at Fort Harrison General Washington inspected all that had been accomplished since his last visit less than two weeks earlier: "the works displayed great promise" according to one source while another noted "the fortifications are not yet finished". Thisorder authorized Colonel John Armstrong - commander atFort Harrison until September 9th - "to cause materials requisite for erection of public buildings" including "a courthouse", jail, hospital, schoolhouse...to be conveyed into our possession." Washington then turned his attention eastward towards Cincinnati where he prepared for what would become America's first war against Great Britain – ultimately leading us into World War II! Now more than 450 years old it remains one of Ohio's most venerated landmarks – hosting special events such as Columbus Day celebrations each year (and next month being host to Columbus Day Week) as well as awarding numerous prestigious awards including National Historical Landmark designation by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in 2016.
