Washington Court House is a historic courthouse located in the town of Washington in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. It was built between 1851 and 1857, and is a two-story, Greek Revival style structure. The court house served as the original courthouse for the Town of Washington. It was enlarged and remodeled in 1957 to its current form. The first shooting at Washington Court House took place on November 25, 1859 when John Hance shot at Amos Kendall while Kendall was arresting Hance's brother-in-law. On October 5, 1861, William Floyd opened fire on nine soldiers from Fort Knox while they slept at their barracks inside the courthouse. The shootings killed three soldiers and injured six others before Floyd surrendered after being tried and convicted of murder. On December 15, 1865, Confederate Major General Sterling Price used Washington Court House as his headquarters during his march southward along the Ohio River. Price's forces destroyed much of Cincinnati before reaching Louisville late that night. After landing at Lake Erie early the next morning, Price continued his march through Steubenville before reaching Dayton early that afternoon; he then entered Dayton into Union hands. Aftermath of Civil War: In 1865 there were many questions about what happened to all of these people who had died or been injured during the Civil War including Colonel James Averill who lost an eye in battle but still functioned perfectly

The original design for this courthouse followed that used at Middletown (now Cleveland), but it differed notably in having an all glass facade instead of only part ironclad windows like those at Middletown or Newtonville (now Dayton). The frame construction was much more robust than later courthouses, allowing it to withstand wear and tear from years of use at the polls and other public events throughout its career as county courthouse. A heavy reliance upon local brick made this westernmost county one of the few areas along Lake Erie where red bricks were used extensively in architecture during our early period; such brick may have been transported via riverboats downriver to be used in various counties along our coastlines due to their marketability as fire bricks. In 1907, following consolidation of several southern Ohio counties into Cuyahoga County, Washington Court House became property of that agency rather than continue to serve as county courthouse; however, it still stands today as one of Cuyahoga County's most significant landmarks dating back to its earliest days as an important governmental center!
