Red dot sights have been used by law enforcement in the Washington Court House area for many years. When the area was first settled by the Iroquois, they built a small trading post in what is now Washington Court House. The area worked its way up through the various waves of European immigrants that came to Ohio during the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1793, when a group of French traders founded Fort Duquesne on the riverfront in Pittsburgh, they decided to move their post some distance east to what is now Washington Court House. The fort served as a checkpoint for goods moving between Upper Canada and Pennsylvania. It also provided educational opportunities for young Frenchmen living in the region. As trade routes grew more complex, so too did the need for secure areas to store goods and conduct business. In 1805, General Forbes ordered construction of Fort Hamilton at Xenia on the Scioto River; this was intended as a deterrent against Indian attacks along the borderland. By 1800, both Ottawa and Philadelphia had developed large port towns on either bank of the Susquehanna River; these new settlements were key engines of economic growth throughout Western Pennsylvania. By 1850, however, Erie Canal had opened up new shipping routes between Pittsburgh and Cleveland; this created an even greater demand for goods transported through Ohio’s Hudson Valley. As a result of this growing industry, commercial buildings began to appear all over central Ohio; one such building was Washington Court House which functioned as both an office building and a meeting place for local businessmen. In 1872-73, while planning his ambitious assault againstierce Native American resistance at Sandusky Heights near present day Cuyahoga Falls., Ulysses S Grant visitedWashington Court House where he experienced firsthand how quickly technology could change war-time strategy. After victory at Sandusky Heights Grant directed his forces south towards Elyria which would cut off supplies reaching Indian fighters from their base in southern Indiana

Washington Court House was built in 1792 as the first courthouse in what is now Ohio. The building served as the court house for much of the 18th century and was also used as a prison from 1797 to 1800. In 1815, it became the capital of Ohio and remained so until its removal to Columbus in 1847. Washington Court House is now a museum and is one of only a few remaining examples of an early American courthouse.
