Washington Court House is a historic courthouse in downtown Dayton, Ohio. It was built between 1859 and 1861 by the American Civil War veteran General Nathan Bedford Forrest as a military prison for Confederate officers and men. The court house served as the main building of the Dayton district court system until 1975, when it was moved to its current location on Washington Street. The first courthouse in Dayton was built on what is now Fourth Street in 1795. It consisted of two buildings, the old log courthouse on the north side and a new brick structure on the south side. George Rogers Clark, who later became Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War, was tried for treason at this courthouse in 1802. In 1809, Congress granted Dayton town status and changed its name to Dayton Township; however, it continued to use the original name for judicial purposes until 1865 when it became known as Washington Court House District 2 Court House). In 1856, General Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased land at 419 E 6th St., just east of present-day Washington Street near where he planned to build his own jail and trial arena. He began construction on what would become Washington Court House soon after purchase; but due to financial difficulties he could not complete it until 1861. The court house originally consisted of five rooms with a courtroomnasal across one room from an Entry Hall that led onto a large square yard with four wings providing accommodation for up to seventy-five defendants at a time (later enlarged to ninety-six). It cost $5,000 per room plus materials (paving, fencing) and $10 per day labor for six weeks construction including Sundays/holidays; but because there were so many soldiers imprisoned here during the war Forrest managed to get free laborers from various places within Union lines working part time for him while he completed his jail complex without losing any sleep or manpower. The first sessions of the newly created 1st Municipal DistrictCourt were held at this court house from October 21 through November 3rd 1860 under Judge John Cavanaugh.. Other notable cases prosecuted here during these early days include: Peter Hennigan v United States et al., David McKay vs United States et al., Richard Stockton vs United States etc.. In 1865 Congress reorganized districts in Ohio into three classes based upon population size – voidedDistricts1 ( Medina County), voidedDistrict2 ( Montgomery County), and reestablishedDistrict3 including all of Warren County; however District 2 remained unchanged (Washington Court House District 2). So Judge John Cavanaugh decided against reconvening this 1st Municipal DistrictCourt at Washington Court House due to lack of space there as well as other more pressing issues faced by that particular judge ..... A new 1st Municipal DistrictCourt was organized out of VoidedDistricts1 & 2 on March 14th 1870 consisting onlyof Dayton Township residents subjectto Justice James Toler’s jurisdiction over unincorporated areas within their township boundaries.. Defendant lists show 24 defendants enrolled hereonMarch14th 1870 .....
