Washington Court House was a courthouse in the town of Washington, Ohio, which served as the seat of local government from 1819 to 1892. The courthouse was built in 1819 and moved to its current location in 1892. It is one of only two remaining buildings on the original Courthouse Square in Washington. The first courthouse in Washington was built by Judge John Cranch and opened on December 12, 1819. It met with little success and was quickly replaced by a more successful building erected by Judge James Laddington on July 4, 1830. This new courthouse remained active for many years until it caught fire and burned down on January 14, 1852. After the loss of their previous courthouse, members of the community turned to Judge James Laddington for help build a new courthouse which they completed on October 9,1852. The new courthouse had much greater success than its predecessor and remains functioning today as a museum within the town hall complex. Judge Laddington also served as mayor of Washington from 1865-1868 and 1870-1872; he is buried at Arlington National Cemetery along with other early Ohio politicians. The last major judicial change that took place at Washington Court House occurred when Judge John Aiken became the first African American judge in Ohio during his term from 1961-1966; this event is significant because it marked an important milestone in both public opinion and racial equality across America.
