Washington Court House is a former courthouse located in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. It was built in 1853 and became the first courthouse in what would become Cincinnati. The building served as the seat of the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners from 1857 to 1865, when it was moved to its current location on Market Street. In 1896, it was replaced by a new courthouse designed by architect George C. Marshall and built with an Italianate facade and neo-Gothic detailing. It served as the seat of Hamilton County until 2002, when that county merged into Cincinnati Municipal government and Washington Court House lay vacant until 2003 when it was purchased by the City of Cincinnati for use as a city hall annex. The building has been used for various purposes since its construction including serving as a jail, newsroom, library, fire department station, post office, and city hall Annex (since 2002). However, due to its age and condition it is not currently being used for any purpose other than storage or display. The original structure at Washington Court House was built on land that once constituted part of what is now known as Newport Township (now Over-the-Rhine). When Hamilton County formed in 1807, it included tracts that were acquired from numerous Native American nations under treaties negotiated between Great Britain and these groups. These lands later came under full ownership of Hamilton County after Congress provided funds in 1791 to purchase them from their respective owners. The site where present day Washington Court House stood initially consisted of only a few acres along Main Street near today's PNC Arena complex; this area would eventually grow into what is now called The Hill neighborhood surrounding the building itself. In 1853, commissioners from bothHamiltonCountyandCincinnati convened at court house to discuss plans for future government operations within the newly formed township; one result of this meeting was the adoption of a charter which created Hamilton County’s first board of commissioners. Aftermath of this fire allowed General John Browns office Building to be completed instead and later became home to other governmental institutions such as state prisons and jails during Reconstruction times throughout America including Columbus itself until it burned down again in 1903).
