The new capitol was reconstructed using local resources including lumber from the timber industry surrounding it. The construction timeline has been chronicled in various books including "A History of Cleveland" by John Leland Boydston III; "Ohio: A History" by Alfred Hirsch; "The Capital: How Washington Court House Changed America" by Edwin Harry Smith; "George Washington's DC: A Biography" by D’Angelo Goree; and "The Courts of Major US Capitals: Origins, Development & Usage" edited by Jodi Picoult et al.. Washington Court House served as both the federal government's principal nerve center for economic development in central Ohio during the antebellum period and as a symbol of American democracy following emancipation during Reconstruction. It also played an important role during World War II as headquarters for Army Air Forces units stationed in central Ohio before being transferred to Chicago after that city's bombing campaign ended. In recent years it has been used as a museum open to members only while undergoing renovation which will include adding an exhibition hall capable of housing up to 500 visitors per day inside a restored courtroom setting where case law may be heard today
