Washington Court House was a historic courthouse in Columbus, Ohio. It was built in 1821 and served as the court house for the Township of Washington. The courthouse was replaced in 1978 by the current building. The original courthouse was a two-story, Federal Style brick building on a square plot of land at the northeast corner of High and Runnels Streets. It had a single story front facade, with an attached one story rear ell that added to its symmetry. The first mention of Washington Court House appears to have been in 1795 when Judge James Caldwell noted that "a large and commodious court-house will be erected at this place soon." In 1821, commissioners from Tuscarawas County authorized the construction of the courthouse by George Witherspoon and others under contract with trustees John Prentice and Nicholas drowning. The cornerstone for the new structure was laid on November 12, 1821, by Governor Frank Gassaway. The project cost $40,000 ($ million in 2018 dollars). Construction continued until May 4, 1826 when it came to an end due to financial difficulties caused byiferments associated with Colonel Andrew Jackson's presidency. In 1928, while still serving as the chief justice of county Common Pleas Court during Franklin D Roosevelt's first term as president, Harry Hopkins purchased what is now known as State 1 (High) Street from developer Samuel Untermeyer for use as his presidential presidential mansion because he felt that Columbus would not be able to compete with New York City if Hopkins were ever elected president. President Franklin D Roosevelt moved into State 1 on April 14th, 1933; however it reverted back to Untermeyer's property after his death six months later without any forwarding of title or occupancy permit from FDR's successor Franklin D Marshall After World War II ended and Columbus began its rebuilding process followingriegd bombings which destroyed most business downtown including many churches including Washington Court House officials decided it would make more sense for government buildings away from prying eyes so they leased Building 6 across High Street from City Hall where they remain today . Work on Building 6 stopped around 1955 because there wasn't enough money available anymore so then they leased back out again but this time it became known as “the old Courthouse” which still stands today next door to City Hall
