Washington Court House was built in 1792 by Captain John Washington and his wife, Catherine. Captain Washington had come to Ohio from Virginia as part of the American Revolution. After the war, he settled in what is now Delaware County and started a trading post there. In 1792, he commissioned George Washington to build the first courthouse in what is now Ohio. The building was located on the present location of Fifth Avenue and Market Street in Columbus. The court at that time met in one room inside the old inn called the Mohawk Tavern. Captain Washington's widow, Catherine, continued to live at home until her death in 1802. Then she moved into her husband's house where she died in 1809. Her son-in-law, Colonel James Kincaid (1757-1835), kept watch over the property until his death in 1830. When it passed through inheritance to General William Henry Harrison (1789-1865), he decided to move it from its original site on Fifth Avenue and Market Street to near his headquarters on High Street between First and Second Streets inColumbus because of its importance as a public square for central Ohio during this period of history. In 1836, General Harrison bought back all but two acres of land around Court House for $4,000 cash plus interest payments amounting to $400 per year for thirteen years after that date. He then donated these two acres permanently to Columbus as Memorial Square or Capitol Square because it was considered one of the most important squares on which Columbus had been founded since its purchase by Spain fromthe Indians more than 400 years earlier! It was here that General Harrison delivered his famous inaugural address January 20th, 1837!
Washington Court House was built in 1792 as the temporary home of the General Assembly of Ohio. It served as the state Capitol from 1801 to 1812, and again from 1815 to 1800. The General Assembly moved to the present building on High Street in 1813. The court house was refurbished between 1951 and 1957 and again in 1984.
