Warrensville Heights was founded in 1837 by John Rankin and his brother, James. The Rankins were the first settlers in what is now Warrensville Heights. They built a log cabin on their farm and named it after their home in Scotland. In 1851, they built a more permanent house and changed the name to Rankin’s House. The Rankins ran a grocery store and post office here until 1957. In that year, they moved to Bellefontaine Township and opened a second grocery store there. They sold the business in 1984 to Taylor family ownership. TheRankins still live on their farm here, where they raise chickens, cows, pigs, horses and sheep. The first target shooting event held at Warrensville Heights was on July 4th of that year by local veterans of the Union Army who had participated in the Battle of Gettysburg two days earlier. A large crowd of locals gathered to watch as Capt.[John] Rankin hit five targets from 50 yards using an old shotgun he had brought from his home countryman’s farm back home in Scotland. This event marked the beginning of many future target shooting events at Warrensville Heights which would continue for many years!
