Warren, Ohio is home to one of the most ancient and well-known shooting targets in the United States. The golf course that now occupies the land where Warren’s historic courthouse once stood was first developed in 1872 by brothers Amos and Malcom Butler. One of their goals was to provide a place for citizens of Warren and surrounding communities to shoot customary target weapons during fairs and other events. The first target holders were made from tree limbs or other materials gathered from nearby woods. It wasn’t until 1920 that the first electronic target arrived in town, thanks to local inventor John Fenton who designed it as part of his invention called an Automatic Target Gun (ATG). As of 2000,[3] there were 898 households out of which 25% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38% were non-families.[4] There were 122 families (or 55 percent) consisting only of individuals and 12 percent consisted of two or more individuals who lived together where each individual earned over $50 per week.[5] The average household size was 2
