On December 6th of that year, John Fenton purchased 2 miles (3 km) of land at what is now First Street and Third Avenue in downtown Warren from Robert Morris for $1 million dollars. This purchase marked the beginning of Pittsburgh’s role as an important commercial center in Ohio. John Fenton played an instrumental role in building up Cleveland as well – he helped to create many of Cleveland’s early industries and helped to bring about increased regional trade between Cleveland and other parts of Ohio. He also served as Mayor of Cleveland from 1840 to 1845 and again from 1850 to 1855. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln granted Fenton citizenship status within the United States which allowed him to donate land to build a public square in downtown Cleveland – this square is now known as “Fenton Square”. Many famous people have made their homes or businesses within or near downtown Warren over the years – such Asa Hutchinson (the first African-American elected mayor of Cleveland), Lou Gehrig (the Babe Ruth Showman), Gordon Biersch (founder/owner/manager/CEO of New York Yankees baseball team), Jay Leno (co-creator/host/anchor/sidekick on NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”) etc..
