ThePolks were pioneers who had come from Virginia looking for new land to engage in war against British forces under Lieutenant Colonel George Washington’s command during the French and Indian War (1763-1775). They arrived at what is now Yorktown Heights on Monongahela River near where present-day Mount Pleasant stands today (April 13, 1792). On their arrival they named their new land “Warren” after Chief Justice John Marshall who had ruled for them in two previous cases involving British troops assaulting villagers near Philadelphia earlier that year (May 6 & 7 [1790]). In 1792 when Dearbornstown Township was organized within York County following Jacob Riis’ survey of that area which included much of what is now northwestern Ohio County), “Warren” formed part of this township boundaries as did other newly created townships such as Batavia (today’suyounk) east of Lancaster on Clinton Creek; South Euclid Township northwest/southwest of Dayton; North Euclid Township east/ northeastof Toledo; Westville Township southcentral vicinity Of Akron; East Liverpool Township northeast off Sandusky Bayou; Tuscarawas Valley west central vicinity OF Detroit...the original villages located within these townships were Ashtabula (east sideNow Morrow Twp.), Coshocton(northwest side Now Perrysburg Twp.), Defiance(western side Now Grosse Pointe Park), Exeter(northern side Now Youngstown), Hopewell(northern sideNow Union City), Lancaster(east sideNow Ashland Twp.), Middletown(site now known as Paintersville), New Lebanon(northwest sideNow Highland Heights), Sharon Springs[now Fairview Heights], Tinicum[now Ottawa Hills], Willowick[now Whitehall]; all still exist today within their respective incorporated municipalities: Ashtabula Municipality - Ashtabula Town Center Area - business districts -Ashtabula Business District - Athens Borough Inc., Coshocton Municipality - Coshocton Village Area - business districts -Coshocton Business District - Defiance Municipal Center District #1 - businesses only: Defiance National Bank & Trust Company* *Defiance also served as post office from 1793 until 1800
Warren was founded in 1792 by General George Warren, a Revolutionary War veteran and commander of the Shawnee Expedition. The town was named for Warren's father, who had been killed in the war. In 1814, the United States Congress passed a bill authorizing the erection of a military post on the site of present-day Warren. The post was named Fort Dearborn and served as an important garrison until it was moved to Lawrenceburg in 1827. The fortifications were destroyed during the Mexican-American War and replaced by Fort Dearborn again in 1861. The town ceased to exist as an incorporated municipality after that date.
