The company produced a wide variety of optical products including telescopes, binoculars, microscopes, and other scientific instruments. In 1932, the Wadsworth company merged with American Optics to form American Optics Corporation.American Optics continued to produce high quality optical products until the early 1990s when it ceased operations. Today, American Optics is a division of supplier Ricoh Inc.

The Wadsworth Optical Shop was founded in 1892 by Dr. Julius Wadsworth and his wife, Fannie. The shop was located on the corner of High and Main Streets in Wadsworth, Ohio. In 1922, Dr. Julius Wadsworth passed away and his wife continued to run the business until her death in 1971. In 1974, the store moved to its current location on Willoughby Avenue in Wadsworth.
Wadsworth is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,584 at the 2010 census. Wadsworth is one of the oldest towns in Stark County and was founded on a large tract of land that included present-day Wadsworth and part of what is now Springfield Township. Wadsworth was originally named "Newburgh" after Newburgh, Indiana. Wadsworth was first settled by Europeans in 1792 when they arrived on a grant from Captain John Cook. At the time, Wadsworth consisted of just 15 homes and five families. The town name derived from two wells which were discovered near the intersection of State Road 9 and Old Northwest Road. The first well produced water so sweet that colonists started to call it "Wadsworth." In 1812, an act passed by the Ohio General Assembly designated Wadsworth as county seat for Stark County because of its importance as a commercial center. The county courthouse moved to Athens in 1836 but continued to be used as county hall until 1914 when it became the Homer Hixon Center for Arts & Culture. The town's growth began during the late 1800s with construction of railroad lines which brought jobs to Wadworth residents. Railroads also contributed to development around schools, churches and other businesses which continue to thrive today. many aspects associated with contemporary Wadworth life such as retail stores (eccentric gift shops), entertainment venues (theatre/ nightclubs) are based outside of town or have been relocated within town limits since opening their doors decades ago

In 1912, they invented the eyepiece which allowed people to look through telescopes without having their eyes covered in lens or other body parts
