Wadsworth, Ohio is home to the Wadsworth Rifle and Pistol Museum. The museum is located in a historic building on High Street that was once the home of the Wadsworth rifle company. The museum contains more than 2,000 guns from around the world and tells the story of gun sights from early pioneers to present day.

The Wadsworth rifle sights company was founded in 1884 by Amos Wadsworth and his son-in-law, George W. Meyers. The company produced a variety of rifles including the .45-70 caliber Wadsworth rifle and the Model 1886 Springfield Rifle. In 1916, the Wadsworth rifle sights company merged with Alco Machine Tools Company to form Alco–Wadsworth Manufacturing Company.
Wadsworth is a small town in southeastern Ohio, United States. It is the seat of Findlay County and lies on the eastern border of Toledo, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Cleveland. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. Wadsworth was founded by colonists from England in 1787. Wadsworth became a town in 1824. The current name originated with Reverend John Wadsworth, who bought land here in 1802 to build a Methodist church.
Gun sights history is a long and complex topic due to the many different types of sights available on firearms. There are two primary types of sights: open sights (such as iron sights) and closed sighted guns, such as pistols. Open sights allow the shooter to see what is behind their target, while closed eyes rely on understanding the layout of the firearm's barrel in order to provide aiming information. The first handgun Sight was patented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. Open sighted handguns were typically used with bows or rifles because they allowed for more accuracy than Closed systems, which required having perfect knowledge of where each shot would land in order to accurately aim. As shotguns became more popular, Open sighted handguns began being used with them as well, making Closed system handguns obsolete. There have been many different designs and modifications over time to accommodate modern shooters and firearms. Some basic features that have been common across all types of pistols include an adjustable rear sight for ranging or sighting in your target; night vision optics for seeing at night; strikerfired systems for increased accuracy; Surefire triggers for better firing control; fiber optic lasers for providing accurate lighting when shooting at night or during low light conditions; grenade launchers/launchers/flash hiders that can be attached directly onto barrels allowing fire from any angle along the length of the weapon; andotsis (a type of recoil reduction) devices that reduce muzzle thrust while maintaining accuracy
The first firearms sights were designed for use with a crossbow. The early crossbows used an adjustable stock to fine-tune the angle of view, which allowed the user to shoot accurately at a distance. A sighting device was then attached to the bow and used in place of or in addition to the eye on a person shooting the bow. In 1527, François Voisin developed a sight for a rifle that allowed shooters to aim through designated openings in barrels, improving accuracy. The new rifles were called "pistols" and became effective during the American Revolution.
Wadsworth is a city in the Athens-Clarion County, Ohio, United States. The population was 25,914 at the 2010 census. Wadsworth was founded in 1813 by Enoch Pratt and is named for him. It became a city on November 2, 1907. The town of Wadsworth was first settled by men from Scotland who arrived in 1811 as part of the Erie Canal construction project. The town's first post office was established in 1812 and its first settlers were three brothers—Enoch Pratt, James Whitmore, and John Reynolds—who came to Wadsworth from New York City with their father and uncle. In 1828, the legislature passed an act providing for a market committee to be appointed to investigate complaints about prices being excessive at local stores near Philadelphia. After hearing evidence from witnesses, the market committee recommended that Wadsworth establish a currency exchange house so merchants could buy goods cheaper from other towns without having to go through Philadelphia's Merchants Exchange. On December 12, 1828, the board of trustees voted to establish Wadsworth as a city and name it after Joel Wadsworth (1782-1860), one of several proprietors of land along the Delaware River that had been donated by Colonel Nicholas Pennoyer (1765-1829). The first mayor of Wadsworth was Moses Brown (1799-1873). He served two terms before moving on to become state representative from Ohio's 1st congressional district in 1850 before serving two terms as speaker of the House of Representatives from 1861-63; he also served as president pro tempore during this time. Brownsville School District No. 1 opened in 1923; it would merge into current Athens Community Schools District No. 5 in 2006. Brownsville School District No., which opened in 1923 when Waddesdon Township merged into Athens Community Schools District No., ceased operations in 2001 due to budget cuts within Athens CPSD. Today’s Wadworth community takes its name directly from pioneer Joel Wadsworth – one of history’s most significant figures!
