On July 10, 1846, during a special session of the county board of supervisors convened by Governor John Pemberton to consider proposed changes to township government following a change in law regarding township incorporation proceedings, Vandalia Township trustees voted 3-1 to incorporate as Wellston Township with Abel Howe serving as president and Wm Haggerty secretary; Abram Morse dissenting because he felt it would be unwise for him to leave his own land alone without municipal privileges attached. The post office at Illini Township was established on November 15th, 1846 by order of governor John Pemberton with George Neely listed as mail carrier. It served until May 25th 1865 when it opened up shop at Uniontown under assumed name “New Wells” due to shortage of letters arriving through Greenville.) vernal stalks were being sold fresh from fields about two miles away so folks knew there wasn’t anything growing there yet!

The first settler in what is now Vermilion Township was David Wilkinson in 1811. He and his wife were the first to clear land on the west side of Big Creek and named their new township after this stream's source, Vermilion Hill. The name may have been inspired by an unusual deposit of vermilion ore that was found near where the town stands today. The first post office was established in 1827, and it continued to be used until it closed in 1907. The town site passed through several changes during its early years: In 1837 it became part of Lucas County; then, in 1851 it became part of Stark County; and finally, it merged with Dayton on February 14, 1909. In 1796 John Richardson built a dam upstream from present-day Vermilion which allowed for easy transportation of water to his farm downstream. This opened up a new business opportunity for him and other early settlers: They could bring their goods by wagon down Big Creek Valley to Richardson's mill on tributaries such as Beaver Dam Creek or Mill Run River. By 1800 about 80% of all agricultural production within Stark County had taken place within two miles (3 km) of Dayton; however, transportation costs were too expensive for many farmers to afford wagon traffic so they turned to horse & buggy services instead. Today Richardsons remain an important landmark in Vermilion because they continue to provide these types of transportation services though not currently operating a mill anymore but still providing visitors with an interesting glimpse into pioneer life in this area
