The town of Vermilion, Ohio, is located in the extreme northwestern corner of the United States. It is bordered by Canada to the north and east, and by Pennsylvania to the south. The village of Vermilion was founded in 1836 by Major John C. Goodyear, a British officer who had been exchanged as a prisoner of war with the Americans during the Mexican-American War. Goodyear named his new settlement after a color he had seen on American troops marching into Mexico City: red vermilion. Like many other frontier towns in America, Vermilion experienced rapid growth during the antebellum period. By 1840, it had a population of around 500 people and was home to a small school and two churches. However, despite its initial success,Vermilion soon became embroiled in political controversy. In 1844, three local men – Daniel Webster Ballou (a congressman from New York), Salmon P. Chase (the first Ulysses S. Grant), and George Averell Harriman – organized an expedition to explore what lay beyond the Great Lakes region. Their purpose was to determine whether or not Ohio could be secured as part of Confederation underwritten by France; when they arrived at Vermilion they discovered that local residents were planning to secede from Ohio and form their own country known as Central America! Despite this evidence of political instability within the town itself, Ballou and his colleagues decided that it would be better for them if they left without further ado than return later with more information about how things stood elsewhere in central America…. After days of debate and argument among their fellow townspeople – some supporting secession while others remained supportive of Unionism – balloting ended inconclusively on March 3rd, 1845….. The decision to secede did not go down well with many locals; some even went so far as to call for “revenge” against those who had brought about their downfall…..Nevertheless,Vermillionians voted 5-2 in favor of secession…. This event set off oneofthe largest civil wars in American history… over issues such as voting rights and statehood…. Ultimately, Confederate forces prevailed over Union ones at Battle Creek before finally surrendering on April 9th 1865……..In total nearly 120 people died as a result of this conflict…..Today much remains undiscovered about what happened during these tumultuous times within Vermillion; however its legacy still hangs heavy over the community today……...

Vermilion is a city in Lorain County, Ohio, United States. The population was 21,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lorain County and the home to the Greater Cleveland Regional Medical Center. The name comes from Vermilion Township, which was part of the Northwest Territory of the United States in 1796 and was organized as part of Summit County. The first people to inhabit what is now Vermilion Township were French traders and missionaries who arrived during the early 1800s. The area around present-day Vermilion was settled by farmers in 1814. By 1830, most of present-day Toledo had been founded andVermilion became a town on July 1, 1836 when it incorporated as a village under state law. The original plat for Vermilion township shown on an old map dated November 7, 1836 consisted only of one lot and measured eight rods square (about two-thirds of a mile long). In 1840, construction began on what would become Greater Cleveland Regional Medical Center – one of America’s largest medical complexes – located on municipal land that once included much agricultural land used for stockyards and other industrial purposes. During World War II, Vermilion played an important role in manufacturing military vehicles such as tanks and bombers. Over 60% of all production at GMC took place here between 1942–1945 because no other plants could accommodate wartime demand for parts produced by supplier companies outside America. Today much machinery still manufactured at GMC in neighboring Delaware but that activity has shifted focus towards Mexico City where much more advanced production takes place using sustainable materials
Vermilion, Ohio was founded in 1797 by Captain John Vermilion and his wife Deborah. The first settler in the area was Isaac Coleman. In 1814, Captain John Vermilion built the first school in what is now Vermilion Township. The school was located on the present site of the village of Vermilion. In 1821, Captain John Vermilion donated land to form Village Green which became a public square in the village. In 1835,Captain John Vermilion donated land to form Township Green which became a township. On December 12th, 1840,Captain John Vermilion died at age 70 years and is buried in Mount Zion Cemetery.
