Vandalia is an unincorporated community in Stark County, Ohio, United States. It is located on the Scioto River near its confluence with the Maumee River. The community was named for General Anthony Wayne Vandalia, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. Senator from Ohio. The Post Office at Vandalia was established in 1811 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The present-day town of Vandalia was first settled by Germans in the early 1800s and their descendants still live there today. In 1814, William Hickey founded a mill here which operated until 1865. A church was built here in 1825 and remains standing today.

At first, the general thought it would be easy enough to find supplies at the river's mouth because there were ample warehouses and farms downstream. However, when he got closer, he realized that there weren't any stores or settlements anywhere within sight! So instead of turning around, General Wayne decided to march northward again and check things out from another perspective. Shortly after reaching Vandalia Creek, General Wayne discovered that his army had been completely destroyed by Native Americans! In fact, most of his men had been killed or captured while trying to escape - including his own son-in-law! The general was so upset over this news that he never reached Vandalia again despite being fully intending do so. For years afterwards, people in Vandalia thought nothing about how their town had turned into such a disaster... until one day they heard aboutGeneral Wayne's visit decades earlier! Suddenly everything made sense and they started learning all about theirgone-to-nowday namesake!
