When the first target holders were invented in Vandalia, Ohio in 1875, they were not just for shooting at targets. They were also developed as a means of teaching children how to shoot. The target holders were made from two pieces of wood that was glued together and then nailed to a post or tree. The shooters would place their rounds into the Holder and watch them fly off the target! In 1951, a new type of target holder was designed by James C. O’Neill. This Holder had an inner tube that allowed the round to stay on top of the tube while it traveled down the track. This helped keep track of where each round had hit the Target.

Vandalia is a city in the state of Ohio, United States. The population was 13,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Vandalia were a group of men from New York who came to what is now Vandalia in 1812. they founded the town on land that had been donated by Delaware County and Coshocton Township. The town was named for General James VanDyke Vandal, commander of U.S. forces during the Creek War (1835-1836). In 1845, Vandalia became one of five townships in Scioto County when it was formed from parts of Summit, Ottawa and Athens counties. In 1892, Scioto County merged with Monmouth and Franklin counties to form Ohio's fourth county, but Vandalia remained unincorporated until 1901 when it incorporated as a city under the name Dayton. In 1912, Dayton annexed portions of Scioto and Medina Counties to create its current metropolitan area; however, Vandalia remained an unincorporated community until 1915 when it became part of the new City Limits district within Dayton's metropolitan area

With these targets, the shooters had more control over where they hit their rounds, so they could potentially score a higher score. These target holders became more popular over time because they were easier to use and less fragile than earlier ones. Eventually, Target Holder company created their own design for target holders that are still in use today! Their design is called an A-frame holder. This holder has two posts that are inserted into each other’s holes on top of your barrel. This makes it much stronger than earlier holder designs, so it can handle heavier rounds better. Additionally, this design also allows you to keep your hands free when shooting!

In 1828, Commodore George Dewey visited Vandalia and pronounced it "the most important place in the world." During the American Civil War, Vandalia became an important military post because of its strategic location on the river. In 1863, General Ulysses S. Grant employed local residents to plant cannon at Fort Donelson in order to capture that stronghold during the war. Vandalia experienced some significant growth during Reconstruction following the end of the Civil War. It became a major center for manufacturing and trade in Ohio after reconstruction began. In 1907, Vandalia was named one ofirteen communities along with Akron, Cleveland Heights., Elyria., Findlay Township., Filterburg Township., Franklin Township., Grove City,, Huntington Beach,, Medina County., Oberlin-Middlesex Telephone Company Station No.( hometown), Perrysburg( now part of Poland,)Richmond Heights(now part of Weirton)and Troy.(now part of Greenville)to receive phone service from AT&T through their Local Service Area network. That year also saw the opening of Wabash Railway Plant No..later renamed Southern Indiana Railroad Company Limited (SIRCL). Following World War II, Vandalia experienced rapid growth due to its proximity to other industrial cities in central Ohio such as Dayton and Youngstown. The town reached a peak population size of over 20,000 people in 1960 but has since declined significantly. Today there are only a few hundred people living in Vandalia proper while most activity takes place around its sister towns nearby including Bedford Heights (home to South Park), Lebanon (home to Stroudsburg), Overbrook (home to Whitehall), Sharon Center (formerly Homer Glen), Bedford Junction (formerly Florence Heights)and Mount Vernon Place(formerly West Chester.)
