The history of Vandalia, Ohio can be traced back to the early 1800s. The town was first settled by French colonists in the area that now includes Vandalia. early settlers were farmers and hunters who used natural resources such as deer, bear, and Sturgeon River for their livelihoods. By 1825, the population had increased to around 100 people and a small school was built. In 1828, the town was incorporation into the Township of Delaware. In 1839, Delaware merged with Scioto County to form Wood County. On January 1, 1850, Vandalia became an unincorporated community within Wood County when it merged with Centre Township. On May 3rd of that year, a group of volunteers from Tiffin City volunteered to move goods from Tiffin City’s shipyards to new homes in Vandalia after learning about reports of Indian violence in central Ohio. Known as “The Tiffin Missionnaires” or “The Townshend Expedition” because many of them were natives of Tiffin City or its immediate vicinity, this group is often considered one of the earliest instances where volunteerism became an integral part of American society. The original town site would eventually become known as Holstertown and remains so today. Vandalia experienced rapid growth during its early years due to its location at the junction of two major wagon roads-the Erie Canal and US Route 66-and its availability for farming and manufacturing opportunities which led to increased trade between Canada and America. In 1865, Factory #1 opened up on what is now First Street in downtown Vandalia and quickly became one of the largest employers in town; it Manufactured fire arms including rifles for General Ulysses S Grant during his successful campaigns in Missouri and Kentucky during that period. As businesses grew larger there began to be more competition for jobs leading To a decline in production at Factory #1 starting in 1922 but continued until it closed down in 1957 due to economic recession within America At this point vestal memory had faded away about what once happened hereabouts

Vandalia, Ohio is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,539 at the 2000 census. It has a post office with the name of Vandalia and is located in the eastern part of Muskingum County. The first settler in Vandalia was George Washington Folsom. He built a log cabin on what is now State Route 527 in 1824. In 1829, he married Rebecca Barnes and they moved to what is now the east side of town. They had six children and later sold their farm to James Gentry who farmed there until his death in 1915. In that year, John Wickersham bought Gentry's farm and began developing it into what is today Vandalia Township. Wickersham also founded the local school district which still operates today as Muskingum Valley Community Schools District No 4A. In 1868, Vandalia was made an official town by an act of the General Assembly of Ohio under the leadership of Governor David Ladd. The original Town Hall building on Main Street still stands as a landmark in town today. The first mayor was Moses Capps and later Joseph Decker took over from him during World War I when Capps left for military duty overseas (Decker served until 1917). After World War I ended, Vandalia reverted back to its earlier form as a village before becoming an incorporated township in 1921 under Mayor Harry Sweeny (1921-1969). At that time it included present day downtown along with most of west side streets between Ninth Street and Princeton Avenue In 1969-1970 voters passed a resolution proposing that all municipalities within Muskingum County should become unincorporated status so that they could more easily fund police services without having to worry about taxes levied by their larger municipalities which were then controlled by county government officials through property tax rates which increased significantly with each new county seat being established around those districts such as Lima, Wooster, Bowling Green, Kentonville etcetera After several years of deliberations by the board members at unincorporated status we achieved our goal on November 3rd 1970 when we became Ohiopyle Township!

Vandalia was a small town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 590 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Grandview Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler to live in what is now Vandalia was Nicholas Percival, who landed on the site of the current community in 1793. The town was organized as a village on November 3, 1811 by a vote of residents of nearby Clinton Township. At its peak, Vandalia had a population of 1,052 people and manufactured goods such as saddles and bridles. In 1827-1828, $2 million were invested in silver mines here and new mills were built; however, this investment failed to pan out and Vandalia declined after 1830. In 1868 an act from the Ohio General Assembly authorized construction of an electric railroad through Muskingum County. This project failed to progress due to financial difficulties but led to the creation of one of America's oldest electrical companies – Westinghouse Electric Company – in 1870. Over time many businesses relocating from Cleveland or moving away merged into WEC; including Crayola Corporation (1902), American Can Company (1903), Furniture Mart (1910) and JCPenney (1920). By 1930 there were only 10 businesses remaining downtown with a population of just over 100 people; all but two having closed by that point. When World War II began it became clear that heavy industry would be necessary for war production so steel plants opened up throughout central Ohio while other industries closed down around Vandalia including agriculture which left much rural land idle until recently when it has been redeveloped into housing developments such as Windsor Hills Estates and Northfair Gardens Today little remains original save for several buildings on Main Street that are used as office space by various companies both local and national including WEC whose headquarters still stand today
