In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered his staff to study the feasibility of using artillery on targets in order to disrupt Confederate lines. The following year, he recommended that artillery be used against Fort Donelson in Tennessee and other key Confederate strongholds. In 1868, he also proposed using cannons on board American ships to sink transports carrying Confederate troops across the Mississippi River. The proposal was abandoned due to cost and engineering difficulties. In 1870, Grant authorized the use of cannons against Fort Wagner in South Carolina after learning that its garrison was too small to resist an assault with heavy artillery. The fort surrendered a few days later without any casualties on either side
Vandalia is a city in the southern Holmes County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Summit Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Vandalia post office has been in operation since 1819. The area that would become Vandalia was first settled by Native Americans in the 1790s. In 1815, the Palmyra and Hazleton Railroad was built through what is now Vandalia, connecting Hazleton with Decatur and Toledo. By 1830, there were over sixty businesses in Vandalia. In 1836, John Cranch founded Jerald & Company which became one of largest cotton merchants in America after creating a new route from Savannah to Lowell on the Great Lakes. Jerald also developed a large tract of land in present-day Akron Township along this railroad line as well as other properties east of Gahanna Lake. In 1839, Ohio Governor David Brown awarded lands to various townships for development including Vandalia Township which included what is now downtown Vandali
Vandalia, Ohio was founded in 1788 by David Vandal and his family. It became a city in 1815. In the 1870s, it was hit by several natural disasters, including an Earthquake that destroyed most of the town and killed many people. The city rebuilt quickly, but experienced another disaster in 1907 when a fire destroyed much of the downtown district.
