Vandalia, Ohio is a small town in the state of Ohio. The population was 1,023 at the 2010 census. It is located in Butler County. The first permanent settler in Vandalia was James Kline who arrived in 1793. In 1819, John McClendon built a tavern on Main Street and named it after his father, Nathaniel McClendon. In 1828, Daniel Webster purchased land east of Main Street from Nicholas Wetmore for $2,000 and founded the village of Websterville to serve as its nucleus. By 1840, Vandalia had a blacksmith shop and two stores. In 1847-48Located near present day Oakland Avenue and Meridian Road - now part of the Euclid School District - Vandalia had a schoolhouse with 30 students and an auditorium used by local churches for meetings. A post office was organized in 1849 with Wm. Hays as its first mailing agent and became known as "Websterville." In 1830s there were three sawmills operating in Vandalia: one operated by James Kline (now occupied by Ivey Sawmill), one by Nicholas Wetmore (now occupied by Wetmore Lumber) and one operated by Thos Prentice (now occupied by Porter Paper). The last mill closed down around 1945 because of competition from other mills in the area. One interesting fact about Vandalia is that it has been mentioned twice as a possible site for Ohiopyle's fictional town "Butterfly" which would have originated out of research done on rural Ohio towns during the 1930s for David Stone Martin's book "The Unseen Hand". Butterfly would have been based on Vandalia but would lack most or all of its infrastructure such as a school or post office; instead it would be founded solely upon word-of-mouth gossip among farmers/farmers' wives who lived nearby and could see potential development potential for their community if it were chosen to be Ohiopyle's fictive town!

Vandalia is a town in Scioto County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Vandalia was established on December 12, 1812. The name probably originated with Colonel John Vandal and his band of volunteers who fought for independence from Great Britain during the War of 1812. In 1816, General David Ziegler moved the county seat from Athens to Vandalia as part of an effort to centralize government control in Scioto County. The new courthouse was built on the corner of Main and Washington Streets and served as the county seat until it burned down in 1824. A new courthouse was erected on State Street between Highways 22 and 24 in 1840. It served as the county seat until it also burned down in 1840. A small community called Cedarville developed around milepost 9 on State Road 22 near where present day US 50 meets CR 690 (the old alignment of I-71). This small settlement developed because settlers found fertile farm land hereabouts and because Cedarville lacked any water resources other than a creek that ran through their village site. After many years there remained only a few dwellings and a few crops left standing when development began along I-271/US 50 six miles east (and now within reach of Vandalia) in 1959; by 1975 all but one structure had been destroyed by developers seeking to make way for shopping malls or other commercial ventures In 1961 Vandalia got its own school district which included portions of Scioto Township In 1969 Vandals Valley Airport opened serving general aviation passengers with service to Dayton International Airport located about 15 miles southwest According to historian Rufus Hanks: " [The] Village [of Cedarville] prospered largely because successive generations grew corn, beans, potatoes and onions for food; they mined coal from nearby hills; made bricks for local homes; wove cloth for clothing; hunted game including deer, turkey, quail and squirrel; took care of dairy animals including cows milked hereabouts” " Development proceeded apace around this bend on what became I-271 ... Soon everyone needed “a job”: joining companies manufacturing things such as radios, buses or shoes – some longshoremen actually labored off shore while others built homes outbuildings." After World War II residents started increasing their usage of electricity due to rising prices since production costs were much lower back then with regards to today's technology . Coal mining stopped operations due to technological advances brought about by fracking which increased gas production yielding less revenuegenerated income so drillers abandoned claims dating back centuries ago thus ending human occupancy and intrusion into remote rural parcels beginning at least 3 mi away
Vandalia is a city in and the county seat of Vandalia County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Vandalia were fur traders from Quebec in 1788. They traveled through the area on their way to trade with the Native Americans. In 1812, John Cincinnatus founded a gristmill in what is now Vandalia after setting out from Cincinnati to found a new city on his farmstead near as today's downtown Vandalia. In 1814, General George Armstrong Custer led his 7th Cavalry Regiment during the Battle of Little Bighorn and was awarded the Medal of Honor for leading that fight. Many years later, one of Vandals' two gas stations still stands near West Main Street and Second Avenue in downtown Vandalia - across from where Armstrong's regiment was stationed when it fought during that engagement. In 1847, Greektown (later known as Whitehall) became an important center for African American trade and social services in central Ohio following emancipation papers being handed down from slave owners there to incoming freedmen who had moved into central Ohio since then free states like Indiana and Illinois had become operational. Greektown would continue to be an important commercial center well into the 20th century until suburbanization began taking hold throughout much of central Ohio beginning around 1960-65 with resultant loss of some cultural significance due primarily to residential developments having replaced most businesses over time; however remnants like Whitehall could still be seen today but are more likely accessed by car or by foot if they are open at all these days unlike many other older neighborhoods which have been completely gentrified).
