Vandalia is a small town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Vandalia were French explorers and fur traders in the 17th century. The name "Vandalia" is derived from the word "vandalo", meaning "to vandalize." In 1803, John Cranch discovered a large salt lick on land that would become Vandalia Township. The area was surveyed by George Stephenson in 1812 and named after him for his discovery of the Erie Canal in western Pennsylvania. In 1814, Vandalia became a city when it was incorporated as a village by Act of Congress. On February 22, 1816, it was renamed Cleveland after President James K. Polk's father-in-law and initial settler James Kapp (1784-1868). On October 24, 1886, Vandalia became an unincorporated community with a post office called Quaker Hill because there were no other settlements within its boundaries. On November 3 of that year, it became an incorporated town with the same name when it ratified an act ofCongress establishing township formanization laws for Summit County which superseded earlier forms by ordinance passed on June 14th 1889 (See also: History of Akron ). At that time there were only 8 buildings in Quaker Hill - 5 houses and 2 churches - all built before 1888 but except one still standing today! An Act of Congress approved on July 6th 1903 established the municipal government under which Vandalsia functioned until 1935 when annexation into Akron made it one municipality again!
