Van Wert, Ohio is an unincorporated community in the County of Van Wert, in the U.S. state of Ohio. It is located on the Scioto River about northwest of downtown Cincinnati. The population was 711 at the 2000 census. The town began as a small settlement called "Werther" on the Scioto River just upstream from where it empties into the river near Van Wert Dam. The name was likely derived from German for "a view", and "Werther" may have been short for "Wesley". In 1837, John Wesley moved his home to this location and renamed it after himself, van werth (meaning view). By 1840, there were 10 settlers living in van werth and it had become a post office with the name Werther/Wesleyville. In 1847-48, during American Civil War efforts to sell war bonds outside Cincinnati (), two men hired by General David Hartsfield discovered coal mines near Werther and induced several other local farmers to invest in these mines as well, opening what became known as The Dayton Coal Company. This company operated until 1870 when operations were discontinued due to lack of investment or competition from more successful mining companies south of the Coshocton River (). In 1875-76, residents voted not to annex into surrounding village Arlington Heights because they felt their interests would be better served by remaining separate (). In 1900-01 when Columbus established its city limits just north of van werth (), many residents chose to move away from van werth because they had little hope that Columbus would provide them with good jobs or affordable housing opportunities within its boundaries (). However, some still settled in van wert due to its historical significance as an early settler community on the Scioto River and proximity to various educational institutions such as Colgate University and Cincinnati State University (). Additionally, businesses such as Pfeffer's Brewery continued operation here until Prohibition forced them out around 1920s. The Ziegfeld Theatre opened its doors in 1904 here starring Fannie Hurst (); actress Alice Faye (); comedian Eddie Cantor ();and singer Cab Calloway () among others before being closed down in 1933 due to fire codes changes that made theaters all smokeless during prohibition.). One notable resident who resided here during this time period was photographer Rollin Smith (), whose studio occupied one building on High Street until 1949 when it moved across town () into what is now known as CameraOne Gallery (&). The Van Wert scopes company was founded in 1892 by four brothers, who named their business after the town they lived in during their high school years. The company became a major player in the optical market, thanks to its innovative designs and quality products. In 1925, the company merged with Boston-based J.B. Littell & Co., and continued to grow until it merged with Leitz in 1961.

Van Wert is a small town in the southern part of Ohio, United States. The population was 6,912 at the 2010 census. It is located in Butler County on the border of Van Wert and Union counties. The first permanent settler in Van Wert was Abram M. Smith who arrived in 1815 from London, England. He built a cabin on what is now Front Street. A post office was established in 1827, and by 1830 the community had about 30 residents. By 1840 Van Wert consisted of six homes and 20 people; it had a school, jail, Methodist chapel, store and two churches. In 1847 John Fenton started plowing land west of town to make hay for his farm animals; he named his farm "Fenton's Hill." In 1850 George Kapp founded a gristmill which became one of the most important commercial institutions in the community. By 1860 there were over 100 residents living in Van Wert with a totalof 12 stores and 50 businesses; it had an academy, hospital, theater and court house as well as two schools (one public-schools). In 1871 local resident James Cavanagh organized a group to purchase 1 acre (0.40 hectare) near what is now Main Street to build a new courthouse; they raised $2,500 () through subscription among their friends and neighbors before hiring architect David Sills to design it according to plans provided by Cavanagh himself. The cornerstone was laid on October 16th 1870 by Governor Andrew Johnson under heavy rain conditions; more than 2200 people attended the event including dignitaries such as Ulysses S Grant and General Sherman.; despite construction problems (including lack of money), within four years the courthouse had been enlarged to its present size - including an addition for judge Advocate General Charles Hurlbut - increasing its official seating capacity from 300 to 550 individuals (). The courthouse closed down completely during World War II due to damage caused by bombing raids but reopened after that war as the Municipal Building which still stands today (); it has been used for various purposes including government functions (including inaugurations of governors), private events (eclipsing both state capitols) and just occasional receptions/fundraisers since then totaling almost 1000 events throughout its history!

The town experienced significant demographic growth during this time period as more people began moving into the area from all around central Ohio. Additionally, Van Wert became known for its producing breweries - including two that played an important role in developing American brewing culture - Cleveland's Pabst Brewing Company and Cincinnati's First National Brewery. However, economic decline hit Van Wert hard during the early 21st century as new mines closed down and production fell victim to competition from elsewhere in the country. By 2000, Van Wert had shrunk considerably compared to its pre-industrial days - though it still remains an important community within central Ohio wine country.

In 1853, the Van Wert town board voted to name the village after Commodore John C. Perry's raid on Mexico City in 1846. The name was changed to Powell in 1881 and back to Van Wert in 1903.
