Van Wert, Ohio is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,751 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. The name "Van Wert" comes from Dutch settlers who founded the town in 1800. The first settler in what is now Van Wert was Johannes van Weerth who arrived in 1795 and built a cabin on the banks of the Scioto River. He named his settlement after his home town of Wageningen (now Rotterdam), Netherlands. In 1802, John Sayers moved to Van Wert and began trading goods with Native Americans near present-day Portsmouth on the Scioto River. In 1807, he became one of the organizers of what would become Butler County and named it for himself. In 1812, James Kapp established a small post office at present-day Van Wert Village and started trade with Native Americans again. By 1814, Kapp had developed an irrigation system that allowed cultivation of corn and beans on much of today's Van Wert Township. The village grew quickly and by 1830 had two stores and twenty residents; it incorporated as a city in 1835 under its new charter from Cleveland, Ohio., but declined due to political instability within its own borders During World War II, Van WERT was located about 15 miles northwest of Cincinnati along I-75/I-71 highway between Cincinnati and Dayton; during this time most activity took place within Dayton area including large military sites such as Wright Patterson Air Force Base

It was founded in 1836 and named for General Anthony Van Wert, an American Revolutionary War general. The first settler in Van Wert was John Sutherlin and his family. Sutherlin built a log cabin on the current site of First National Bank of Van Wert in 1836. In 1840, Jno. Hildebrandt opened a store and post office in the town. A school began serving students from Van Wert in 1846 and continued until 1950. The first church building was erected in 1839 and the present one was built in 1907. The population of Van Wert declined from its peak of 1,827 people during the 1930s to just 624 people by 1940 due to World War II and then to 586 residents by 1970 because of changes brought about by suburbanization and other economic factors. However, since 2000 there has been a resurgence with the construction of new housing developments along Ulysses Road which has helped increase the population once again to around 1,500 today as it is still one of Butler County's most vibrant towns with active businesses and cultural attractions that draw visitors from all over

In 1819, the first college in Ohio was established in Van Wert by Reverend John Woolridge. In 1870, the Ohio Railroad was built through Van Wert and the town began to grow rapidly. By 1907,Van Wert had become one of the largest cities in Ohio. The city experienced significant growth during World War II as it became a major manufacturing center. However, during the late 1960s and early 1970s,VanWert experienced several financial setbacks which led to its decline into decline status. Today, Van Wert is a small city with few resources that retains its historical significance as an important cultural and economic center in central Ohio.
