Van Wert is a city in eastern Ohio, United States. The population was 24,909 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Van Wert County. The name "Van Wert" was derived from the Shawnee word "wethe," meaning "a stream where game is hunted." The first permanent settler in what is now Van Wert was David Caldwell, who arrived in 1788. He founded a tavern called Caldwell's Ferry on the Scioto River and named it for himself. In 1792, he married Elizabeth Goodrich and moved to what is now Van Wert Township. David Caldwell and his wife had four children: John (1793-1851), Rachel (1795-1872), Anna (1800-1864) and Daniel (1802-1865). Their tavern became known as Goodrich's Tavern until 1827 when it changed its name to VanWert Tavern after General Andrew Jackson's victory over Native American forces at Battle of Fallen Timbers near present day Dayton, Ohio. In 1800, Anna Crawford married Phineas Griggs who settled in what is now Van Wert Township with his family. They operated a grocery store there for many years before moving to Lima in 1847 and opening their own grocery store there which continued until 1943 when it closed because of World War II damage. That year also saw the founding of the first high school in town by Mrs. Cooksey which remains open today as Stuyvesant High School - one of only two high schools operating within a city limits while Ohio still has statewide public education laws set forth by state government governing all other locales therein). In 1865, Daniel Griggs located a bakery on Market Street serving the community until 1899 when he closed down due to Prohibition issues and then reopened under another name about 1906 before finally closing again about 1912; this time he reopened as Griggs' Bakery & Cafe which continued until 1998 when it merged with nearbyopened up into that company today.) David Caldwell died on October 12th, 1848 aged 66 years old while living in Lima with his wife Elizabeth Goodrich and three children: John(aged 15), Rachel(aged 11)and Anna(aged 7).
