He platted the village of Westpoint on the Scioto River and named it for his home country. In 1806, John Burt founded thetown of Athensburg on a tract of land he had purchased from Nicholas van der Velde. In 1837, David Wright settled near present-day Van Wert and named it after himself and his father-in-law Jeremiah Wright. Wright was one of many early settlers who traveled to America looking for land to settle and found success as traders and farmers. Their descendants still live in Van Wert today with some numbering over 100 individuals including prominent citizens such as David Sills and Clyde Overstreet Jr.. One local landmark that remains standing today is the Wright House which served as a schoolhouse until 1975 when it burned down during a storm caused by severe weather conditions across eastern Ohio In 1977, a new school building was built downtown which continues to serve as the town's primary educational facility today Additionally, VanWert also enjoys excellent retail options with several small businesses located within walking distance of most residents

Van Wert is a town in the northwest corner of Ohio, United States. The population was 1,588 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Dutch-American settlers in 1811 and named for Hendrik van Wert, a surveyor who had surveyed the area. The first stores were established in Van Wert by early 19th century pioneers. In 1832, General James K. Polk traveled through Van Wert on his way to campaign for president and stayed at the private home of Isaac Hurd while he toured the area. After Polk's election as president, Hurd invited him to stay at his home and dine with him and other local residents. VanWert became a city in 1903 when it merged with its neighbor Piqua. Its mayor from 1903 until 1907 was Edwin Bickford Jr., who also served as Mayor of Lima Heights from 1912 to 1916 and1920 to 1924. A steel mill was built in 1902 near present day downtown VanWert by Jens Moller & Sons millsmiths; it closed around 1960 but left an important legacy on the townscape including several large warehouses still standing today that are used for storage space today. In 1937, during World War II, much of what is now downtownVanWert was destroyed bybombing raids which killed more than 100 people and damaged or destroyed many buildings - some still standing today such as Watchtower Bible & Tract House (now known as First Baptist Church) which has been preserved as a museum open to the public since 1944
