Van Wert is a small town in southwestern Ohio, United States. The population was 2,719 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Marion County, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Van Wert was Nicholas Van Wert who arrived on July 6, 1800 from Holland with his family and twelve others. He platted what would become the town of Van Wert on August 12, 1800. The community's first school opened in 1801 and served grades one through five. The first post office was established in 1802, and named for Nicholas Van Wert (the founder). In 1804, the name of the town was changed to Greeneville after General John Green who had helped lead American forces against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1907, general Motors Company built a factory near present day Van Wert which produced engines for their cars and other products until it closed its doors in 1948. At that time, GM produce about two-thirds of all Cleveland's industrial output. The area around GM Plant No. 8 has been called "The Great Lakes Region" because many manufacturing plants were located there including those of Hormel Foods Corporation (now Tyson Foods), JVCKENWOOD Industries Inc., DuPont Chemical Company and Addison Granite Products Co.. Other large employers during this time include CRI International Paper Company (now Corning) and First National Bank of Ohio (now FirstMerit Financial Services). Today much of what once operated atGM Plant No. 8 remains as an undeveloped field adjacent to Interstate 71 north of downtown Akron; however several renovation projects are currently taking place at nearby businesses such as Applebees restaurant and drug store which replaced parts associated with earlier operations at the site Additionally recent construction work has included restoration of historic homes on Center Street near I-71 as well as new development throughout downtown which includes a new arts center,, high school & library addition along with numerous small business ventures This growing trend is also evident within neighboring towns such as Westlake Village to the east where several large apartment complexes have been developed while smaller businesses have seen increases in activity recently inside minutes walk from their respective cores

Van Wert, Ohio is a small town located in the Monaca, Ohio area. It was founded in 1821 by John VanWert and his wife Hannah. The town had a population of about 150 people when it incorporated as a village in 1846. In 1902, the village became an all-village community with a population of 1,500 people. The history of Van Wert begins with its founding as part of Monaca Township. The township was formed from parts of Defiance Township and Athens Township on November 3, 1821. On December 12th of that year, John VanWert registered to vote at the new courthouse located in the village center. The first election held in Van Wert was for members of the township board; four residents were chosen to serve for three years each. On January 9th, 1822, voters approved a petition to form a Village government within the limits of the township. On February 9th they also voted to name their new settlement after General George Washington “Washington Town” which would become home to more than 1,000 people over time In 1896, Van Wert became one of thirteen villages nationwideto be included in the consolidation process known as Municipal Consolidation and achieved municipal status on April 25 th . As part of this changeover process many services such as water supply (through private piers), fire protection (through volunteer firefighters) and police services were transferred from individual townships into our new entity including public works department including building maintenance One important note about our municipal history is that no taxes were levied until 1898 when we began charging an assessor's fee for property tax purposes
In 1814, the village of Van Wert was organized and platted. In 1815, the first school was built in Van Wert. The town continued to grow until it had a population of over 100 in 1830. The first city government was created in1835 when Van Wert became an incorporated town. In 1854, the last section of land for which Van Wert paid taxes was annexed by Cincinnati.
