Van Wert was a small town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. It was located on the east side of the Mahoning River and had a population of about 1,200 people in 1870. The Van Wert Male Seminary was founded in 1868 by Absalom Van Wert. The college closed its doors in 1970. The first post office at Van Wert was established in 1847, and held until 1860. The first store, operated by James Cushing and his son John Cushing, opened in 1850. The first road to Van Wert was built from Cincinnati to Warsaw via Old Washington Road in 1851. A schoolhouse and Methodist church were built there in 1853; both were removed during the American Civil War for lack of funding. In 1865, the town donated land for a new high school which became known as VanWert High School. That same year saw the opening of the Erie Canal which connected Cincinnati with Toledo across the Mahoning River. In 1870, when Ohio became an independent state, Van Wert had a population of 1,200 people; it decreased to 100 people by 1880 due to disease and other causes.
