Van Wert is a small town in Northwest Ohio, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Muncie region. Van Wert is located in Summit County and the surrounding counties. The first settler in Van Wert was Capt. David Capps who arrived from Connecticut on July 15, 1788. He built a log cabin on the site of what is now the town square and named it for his birthplace, Westville, Vt. Captain Capps died May 7, 1789 when his vessel "New England" ran aground on shoals near present day Perkinsburg. His wife Nancie (Wright) Capps founded a Female Seminary which still operates today as Weiser University College faculty member Dr. Karin Weiser-Kramer; Professor emerita Mrs. Ursula Kappelman; and Assistant Professor Mrs. Denise Jorgensen-Foley In 1814 Isaac Beall purchased land east of present day Van Wert from Capt David Wright and began construction on Van Wert's first schoolhouse which he named Jefferson School House after Ulysses S Grant's assassinated President James Buchanan in 1844 In 1847 John Purdy bought land west of present day Van Wert from Isaac Beall and started construction on what would become Purdy's Store which he also named Jefferson School House after Ulysses S Grant's assassinated President James Buchanan A post office was established at Van Wert in 1854 by Territorial Governor Nicholas Dayton to serve residents of Summit, Butler, Lucas and other counties within Northwest Ohio . mail service was discontinued by order of Secretary Edwin Stanton due to lack of funds in 1865 . A new mail service branch (the so called “Old World” service) was established with three cars (later four cars) driven by operators out to various points around northwestern Ohio serving as far away as Youngstown until 1975 when it was merged into US Postal Service Cleveland District No . 5 The first town meeting took place on December 8th , 1800 when Rev Christian Haggerty convened an assembly to organize “the village here” according to Article IV Section 3 of the Township Agreement dated October 14th 1800 between Reverend Haggerty and Trustees John Seymour & Samuel Morse Facilities for public education were necessary because no schools existed within one mile of any house or plantation ; “It will be our endeavor to have a Schools Committee appointed for this purpose” reported Reverend Haggerty .. In January 1800 trustees Sam Seymour & Jeremiah Morse organized a Lyceum society with Samuel Morse chairing its Board .. On February 12th1800 meeting minutes recorded that trustees John Seymour & Jeremiah Morse voted not To Approve Establishing A Library But Agreed That They Would Support Any Efforts To Do So If The Town Could obtain Enough Money .. At another meeting held March 9th1800 trustee George Miller proposed having Ladies Garden Club assemble And Plant Trees In Front Of The Hall For Display When Visitors arrived Unknown What Happenednext

The name of the town comes from Dutch settlers Van Wert who arrived in 1795 and named their community after their farmstead in that year. The first settler in what is now Van Wert was John Atwater who came to this area during the 1800s. He built a log cabin on the bank of the Cuyahoga River around 1810. Other early settlers included Jakob Dennison, Jacob Green, Nicholas Fenton and Ezekiel Hubbard. In 1812, David Farnsworth erected a log cabin on land which he donated to the town of Van Wert for $100 cash. In 1814, Drury & Byers built a frame house on Old Erie Road near present-day State Route 422 and laid out lots for residents in what are now parts of Smithtown (north), Morehouse Heights (south), Irvington (west) and Van Wert (east). The first store opened in 1830 by George Prentice & Brothers at what is now First National Bank Square across from High School Annex #1 on Depot Street. In 1835-36, two groups of Methodists founded an agricultural society called Zion Baptist Church and moved their meeting place to what is today First Baptist Church Cemetery southeast of town line. They planted crops there until 1840 when they moved to nearby Clinton Township where they continued farming until 1850 when they disbanded their church society completely because of lack of money or interest among members or lack of space in Clinton Township for such an activity. A school was organized by Rev. James Hirschhorn as part of Zion Baptist Church Cooperative Union School District No 2 on November 6, 1846 from Unincorporated territory eastward including much present day Van Wert township including most sections east side extending into Seymour Twp., south side extending into Cleveland Twp., west side extending into Strong Twp., with branches off main roads leading to other towns: Clinton Township; Spencer Twp.; Mayfield Heights; Hillcrest; Soo Ln.; Akron Hills; Fairview Heights; Grafton Mills.—The first board members were James Hirschhorn (president); Solomon Holmes (vice president); Amos Rouse (secretary); John Krugel Sr.(treasurer). For many years schools were open Monday-Friday 9am-3pm with special classes offered Friday evening after school.— inhabitants were required to attend religious services led by preachers each Saturday morning except Sundays which were free schools.— A high school formed part of Cooper Union Secondary Schools district #2 but it closed its doors in 1957.— On September 10th 1935 local voters passed a resolution ratifying an act approved by state legislature creating Northern Ohio Normal School District No 1 within boundaries lines embraced by that resolution.—On October 3rd 1935 trustees elected Drury Asst Superintendent over George Prentice Jr.. After World War II ended northern Ohio Normal School District No 1 became Southern Ohio Normal School District No 1 which changed its name back to Northern Ohio Normal School District No 1 effective January 3rd 1947.- Today’sVanWert Municipal Court building was dedicated February 13th 1949.- The first post office opened February 12th 1889.- Residents voted Sunday night August 15th 1951 not to annex part of Strong twp., following annexation vote Lakewood had been proposed as potential annexation site.– On December 4th 1951 residents voting “no” annexed all remaining unincorporated territory making VanWert an official Town.– New name given on July 14th 1959 when Northern Ohio Normal School District No 2 merged into newly created SouthernOhioNormalSchoolDistrictNo1—-Today’sVanWert Municipal Court building was dedicated February 13th 1989.– According to historical records those original six blocks located between Depot Street/First National Bank Square and Elmira Road/Route 422 were developed as Warehouses beginning about 1830– In 1931 President Franklin D Roosevelt delivered his Fireside Chat at Eastern Market here while giving remarks about economic development opportunities available through stimulus programs being conducted via survey organizations throughout our country—- van wertherohio
