It was founded by Dutch colonists in 1795 as part of the Miami Purchase. The first school in Van Wert was built on Meeting Street in 1805. The first post office called Van Wert was established in 1827. The name of the town changed to Van Wert after Company C of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry (the "Werthers") fought a battle there on October 22, 1837. The village of Van Wert was organized on December 6, 1839, from portions of the town of Dravet Township and parts of the townships of Belleville and Delaware. On March 15, 1840, it merged with the borough of Athens to form Athens-Van Wert Township. On November 3, 1850, arsonist George Hutton set fire to a flour mill that operated out of what is now School Avenue in Athens (now an industrial area). This caused $10 million worth of damage to buildings and equipment within 20 minutes; this event became known as "The Flour Mill Fire". As a result of this attack on Greektown's flour mills and other businesses throughout Warren County (and soon other counties), anti-flour milling sentiment increased among Americans during the antebellum period. In response to this feeling against industry overall, Congress passed the states' rights bill into law on February 14th,1853 – which ended state regulation over flour production - thus paving the way for largescale flour farming operations across America. In 1815, Ohio became a state, and Van Wert County was included within it. The county seat was moved from Aliquippa to downtown Cincinnati in 1872.
