The Van Wert Armory was founded in 1907 by Major General Walter S. Farrell, who served as the Commander of the Ohio National Guard. The Armory was originally built to produce the M1 Garand Rifle and became known for its production of other firearms including the P08 Pistol and M1911 Pistol. In 1932, the Armory became affiliated with Rock Island Arsenal and continued to produce artillery equipment such as rifles, pistols, shotguns and machineguns. In 1984, the Armory merged with a nearby company to form a new manufacturing plant that continues to produce firearms today.
Van Wert is located in the heart of the Great Lakes region, and its history goes back to 1811. At that time, it was known as "Werther." The town was named after Johann van Werth, who purchased a tract of land in what is now Van Wert from the Indians in 1811. He built a log cabin here and started a small farm. In 1815, he married Anna Maria Schlosser and this led to the village's name change to Van Wert. In 1827, the first school was established in Van Wert by Mr. and Mrs. James Dickey. It remained open until 1945 when it closed due to lack of pupils. The first post office came into being in Van Wert on November 1, 1830. Mr. John Aiken operated the business for many years before his death in 1862. From1827-1945, Van Wert had three newspapers - The Sentinel (1827-1945), The Republican (1830-1945), and The News Leader (1948-present). These papers were all published at different times by different owners until they merged into one paper effective January 1st, 2019 under the name of The Vandalia Herald Times Journal/The Vandalia Daily Journal On October 20th 1907 President William McKinley delivered his inaugural address from Buffalo Niagara University's Law Quadrangle on State Street in downtown Buffalo NY which began America's "Great White Hope" program which aimed to bring democracy to areas still controlled by European powers such as Germany and Austria-Hungary

Van Wert is a city in the southwestern corner of Ohio, United States, and the county seat of Van Wert County. The population was 11,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The first European to visit Ohio was Father Gabriel de Landa in 1534. He named the region "Vincennes" after French explorer Jacques Cartier, although no evidence exists that he ever actually went there. In 1795, while on a military campaign against Native Americans in what is now West Virginia, George Washington's army discovered and explored what would become Ohio during its march through that state from Pennsylvania to Baltimore. When he reached Cincinnati, he ordered his troops to encamp near Mount Vernon so as not to contaminate their water supply with Indian blood by drinkin' from the river which they were then besieging (the Battle of Fallen Timbers). In 1803, when John Quincy Adams became president and ordered Congress to cede all Louisiana Purchase lands east of the Mississippian River to President James K. Polk for use as a national parkland reserve known as Franklin D. Roosevelt National Park (later redesignated Evergreen Park), Van Wert was one of many towns along with Athens and Dayton that petitioned for inclusion within this new parkland. The town's case won out over those of Athens and Dayton because it had more residents who could be counted upon to support it in an event such as annexation or development proposals; these concerns about future growth also helped turn Van Wert into an important center for scientific research during the early 20th century due to its location close enough to major universities like Union University and Western Reserve University
In 1813, the Van Wert Township was organized. The first post office was established in 1814. The present courthouse was built in 1868.
