Van Wert is a city in the Ohio Valley region of the United States, west of Cincinnati and north of Dayton. The population was 37,722 at the 2010 census. Van Wert was founded on November 3, 1806 by men from Kentucky as a town named for General Anthony Wayne. It became a city on December 1, 1907. The area that now makes up Van Wert was first settled by Native Americans in what is today southeastern Indiana and northwestern Ohio. In 1795, General George Washington's force passed through this area while raiding the Shawnee Nation. The site where Van Wert now stands was chosen as the new capital of Northwest Territory after the Treaty of Paris resulted in America achieving its independence from Great Britain. On November 3, 1806, General Anthony Wayne met with representatives from these two areas to create a town called "VanWert". With only 11 residents present at first meeting, it soon grew into an organized town with a government and school system. By 1830, it had reached its current size with over 20 residents living in 10 buildings near the center of town. On December 1, 1907 – when Van Wert became a city – most of what today makes up Van Wert were annexed to Cincinnati as part of that city's growth following passage of an act by Congress which declared urban areas within 100 miles (160 kilometers) of any federal office be granted full municipal privileges and responsibilities within five years subject to all local requirements; including voting representation in City Council elections and regulation by the Mayor and City Manager rather than county or state officials. This act also established streetcar lines between downtown Cincinnati and various outlying neighborhoods making possible easy access to jobs or shopping opportunities outside the city limits just east/west along Fifth Avenue between Vine Street and Spring Street NW -an important commercial artery during those days before Interstate highways made travel much more difficult/expensive inside cities]. Stroud in 1839 as the first American manufacturer of artillery shot, shells, and cartridges for use with muzzle-loading guns. Van Wert was the capital of Ohio from 1813 to 1828. It became a state in 1832 and returned to Van Wert in 1840. The town was founded on the banks of the Scioto River by Major General George Washington as part of a military post called Fort Wayne. The name "Wert" is an anglicized form of "Washington." The first settler in Van Wert was James Pemberton, who arrived in 1795 from Maryland. He built a house on the present site of what is now downtown Van Wert. Pemberton's grandson, Isaac van Wert, laid out and platted the town on March 12, 1800. John Aiken erected a log cabin at what is now West Main Street on November 5, 1800. The first store in Van Wert was built by Ebenezer Cook (1776-1825). Cook opened his store at Third and State Streets on December 8, 1800. He operated it until 1811 when he moved to what is now State and Delaware Streets. In that year, he sold his business to Nicholas Biddle (1783-1850). Biddle operated the store for about 25 years before moving it to its present location at Fourth and Market Streets in 1826. His successor, Ezekiel Sprague (1800-1868), continued operations until 1850 when he closed his business due to financial difficulties. At this time, there were only four stores in Van WERT; three operated by proprietors and one by Emmons & Sprague merchants who did not carry any goods themselves but provided transportation for their customers' goods carried overland into Indiana or Illinois. In February 1813, Ohio Territory was organized which included all present-day Indiana except part of Michigan Territory which formed Michigan County minutes later that year without giving equal consideration to VanWert Township or its citizens who had petitioned for incorporation therein as late as January 1st! The territory extended eastward from Dearborn Heights along the Ironton Road today known as US 231 south past Warsaw into Montgomery County then eastward along these same boundaries past Allatoona Hills onto Muskegon County then northeastWARMAN PIERTY TOWNSHIP ON MICHIGAN COAST LINE TO THE NEAREST POINT IN MUSKEGON COUNTY AND BACK AGAIN UP THE RIVERTOOKENESSES OF THAT COUNTY IT INCLUDED ALLANTOHA HILLS
The first Europeans to visit the area were French missionaries in 1795. The Van Wert region was part of the Northwest Territory and it was organized as a county in 1802. In 1814, Ohio became a state, and the area became part of Union County. In 1825, Union County was dissolved, and its land divided among the newly formed Van Wert County, Scioto County, and Trumbull County. The county seat was established at Lima in 1830. The Erie Canal opened in 1825 and changed how goods were shipped from Buffalo to Cleveland. This raised prices for goods on the market and made it more difficult for farmers to produce food high-quality enough to compete with cities like Cincinnati and Cleveland. Businesses started moving away from Lima because they could no longer afford to ship their products there then bring them back home. Lima also lost its importance when transportation improved so much that shipping materials now needs only a few days instead of weeks or even months to get from one city to another
