After World War II most industry left or moved away from central Illinois after new technology made manufacturing more efficient than ever before;[11][12][13] however some heavy industry still resides today such as chemical companies that have their plants close to transportation hubs like downtown Chicago or Dayton Airport so they can access global markets easily. However recent investments by local governments indicate that urbanemayor Rahm Emanuel's vision for mixed use redevelopment along Canal street could revive downtown's fortunes if done right
