In 1892, Ohio University's first optical store was opened in the basement of its building on Euclid Street. It was called the Optical House and sold lenses, telescopes, binoculars, microscopes and other optical equipment. The store closed in 1915 when Urbana moved to its present location on State Street. The Optical House operated as a school shop until 1954 when it became part of the Ohio University Foundation. In 1984, it was taken over by the Urbana Storefront Gallery which operates it today as an exhibition space for art and retail items related to optics and glassmaking. The history of optical accessories in Urbana, Ohio can be traced back to the early 1800s. One of the first businesses in Urbana was a store called The Optical Shop, which operated from 1802-1820. In 1825, a man named Levi Dow opened the first glassworks in Urbana. From this business, Dow created and sold various types of optical products including telescopes, microscopes, and opera glasses. In 1829- 1830, Samuel Morse opened an optometry business in Urbana which is still open today. Morse was responsible for creating the world's first letterpress printing press and developed the concept of phototypesetting. In 1855-1856, Dr. John Higginson installed a new lensstock at The Optical Shop that became known as the Higginson Stock. This stock was used to create many famous lenses such as those used by Sir Joshua Reynolds in his paintings and James McNeill Whistler's drawings.
Urbana, Ohio was founded in 1786 by John Adams and is the second-oldest city in the United States. The city is located on the west side of the state of Ohio, north of Cincinnati and east of Dayton. It is a major cultural center for central Ohio and has been home to numerous colleges and universities, including Brown University, The Ohio State University, and Wright State University. The Urbana metropolitan area includes all or part of five counties in northwestern Ohio: Butler, Hamilton, Highland Heights/ Westlake/Eastlake, Paulding/Cleveland Heights/Summit View, and Wayne County. As of 2010 census estimates,[1] Urbana had a population of 108,826;[2] it has grown rapidly since 2000 when its population peaked at 117,917. Urbana was founded as a small farming village on the edge of what is now Dayton. In 1786 John Adams sold land that he had purchased from tax collectors to George Washington to become the nucleus around which Urbana would be developed. Over time other settlers arrived until by 1800 there were over 100 people living in Urbana. By 1810 Urbana had a schoolhouse and two stores. On December 3rd 1811 representatives from 10 settlements meeting at Philadelphia voted unanimously to form a town charter with William Caldwell as president.[3] That same year began what would be an arduous process in building up the fledgling community with little money or support from outside sources; during this time much effort went into networking with other townsfolk to build relationships that would lead to further development over time. In 1814-1815 Caldwell served as speaker pro tempore (a position equivalent to mayor) for both sessions of the General Assembly (the lower house) in response to efforts being made by Senator James Ketchum who desired urbane growth within his own district without encroachment by rival townsmen – this also marked an important moment for urbane growth because it demonstrated cleanly separation between townspeople’s professional responsibilities within government while still honoringelected officials through their influence on legislation – something that continues today albeit more subtly

It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet metropolitan area. Urbana was founded in 1847 as a small village on the banks of the Danube River by Daniel Dunklin and others from Hardin County, Kentucky. The town site was selected because it had a good location for a canal crossing and other important points on the proposed trail between Chicago and Indianapolis. Many famous people have lived or worked in Urbana including Harry S Truman, Franklin D Roosevelt, Jay Cutler and Dick Cheney among many others The City Council voted unanimously to annex neighboring Stonington Township on September 9th 2009 after residents there successfully lobbied for annexation
