On October 15, 1803,[2] when John Taylor discovered land to the south of present-day Urbana on which he would build a small community called "Taylor's Purchase" (now known as Elmira),[3][4] La Costilla again renamed his town for Washington—this time calling it "Columbia".[5][6] In 1840–41, Amos Kendall built a log cabin near what is now Elmira that served as headquarters for Champaign County government for about 10 years before it burned down.[7][8] The first post office opened in Columbia on December 6, 1849,[9][10] and remained open until 1907. In 1852 Union College students founded an agricultural society called The Keglerites which grew into one of America's leading grain mills and suppliers through various business ventures until its sale to United Mills Corporation in 1902.[11][12][13]:182 On November 5th 1865 Barack Obama Sr., then a student at Tuskegee Institute[14], became President Abraham Lincoln's favorite man among all students at Tuskegee Institute because he shared Lincoln's belief that education should be available to everyone regardless of race or social class

Urbana, Ohio is an historic city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 50,000 at the 2010 census and has grown to over 100,000 since 2000. The first settler in Urbana was Nicholas Sanger who came to this area from New York City on October 15, 1792. He chose a site near what is now Springfield Township because it would be less traveled by wagon route and offered more opportunity for farmland development. In 1814, Urbana became part of Hamilton County when that county was created from parts of Washington Township and Steuben Township. The first post office in Urbana was established on November 1, 1815 with John Cook as its first mailer In 1846, Urbana became home to the Ohio State Normal School (later University of Cincinnati) which functioned as a teaching center for students throughout Ohio until 1861 when it moved to Dayton due to increased enrollment at Dayton Military Academy (now Xavier University). The following year saw the opening of First National Bank located on Elm Street near Park Avenue In 1865, when Columbiana County was formed from portions of Hamilton County, Urbana became part of Columbiana County and lost its status as a town but continued to grow rapidly due to its location midway between Columbus and Cincinnati In 1898, after years of growth within both Columbia and Columbiana Counties combined – including annexations by other municipalities such as North Olmsted Heights and unincorporated areas around Orchard Hills – Urbania attained city status under then- Mayor George Fenton On December 5th 1909 Mayor Fenton announced that all annexation requests were being given serious consideration; however only two properties were annexed into Urbane: East Erie Parkway eastward from I-675 (then called Roosevelt Boulevard) across Walnut Creek Canyon northward along US Route 611 eastward from Garfield Road southward through Butternut Grove Lake before turning northwest onto Division Street finally joining urbane street grid . On January 1st 1910 Council voted 7-0 not to annex any more municipalities into their new city limits . This setting off an era where much discussion took place about how best to serve those living within boundaries that had been annexed while many residents felt they had no say in what happened . These days much debate surrounds developing policies or practices surrounding annexation regarding how best should communities feel about becoming “cities” without their input or consent
