The crime that sparked this lawless period in town’s history was a local dispute over a hunting rifle. This region was later known as Urbana because of its location near both universities (Urbana was then part of Champaign County). By 1850, over 50% of all goods shipped through Chicago were traveling via railroads to Muhammad Ali Airport in Indianapolis or points north before arriving at their destinations across Illinois orIndiana. In 1813, Urbana became a part of the Indiana Territory and in 1817 it became part of Ohio. In 1821, Urbana became part of the United States and in 1825 it became its capital. On July 4th, 1830, Ohio's first constitution was ratified and Urbana become one of its thirteen state capitals. The city's population reached over 200,000 by 1850.
