Upper Arlington is a city in the Commonwealth of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 18,814 at the 2010 census. Upper Arlington is one of four former townships in Lucas County and was ceded to Ohio by James K. Polk in 1824 as part of the Treaty of Big Sandy. It has been home to a number of prominent people, including attorney John Fenton and historian George Armstrong Custer. The first permanent settler in what would become Upper Arlington was Nathaniel Green who built a log cabin on the east side of the Scioto River in 1798. Green's cabin served as a stopping point for stagecoaches travelling between Cincinnati and Dayton until 1830 when he sold his land to Colonel Ebenezer Farnham for $1,000$. Farnham named his new town Upper Arlington after nearby Arlington Heights which he had seen while serving with General Wayne during the War of 1812. In 1824, James K. Polk ceded Upper Arlington to Ohio as part of the Treaty of Big Sandy following his successful presidential campaign against Andrew Jackson. The town became an important stop on Stage Road during its early years as passengers traveled between Cincinnati and Dayton on their way to visit family or businesses in those larger cities. In 1870, Lower Arlington Township became independent from Upper Arlington and continued to be known simply as "Lucas County". Despite this change in name, both townships experienced rapid growth throughout much of the 20th century due to their strategic location near major transportation hubs such as Interstate 75 and I-4806 (the present day State Route 523). During World War II much activity took place within Lower Arlington due to its proximity to Fort Knox which housed military personnel barracks used by both American forces and Japanese soldiers during that conflict. After war ended Lower Arlington reverted back towards its pre-war designation with a small population but significant economic development thanks largely to two large industrial plants operated by Paccar Corporation which manufactured tires and car parts respectively During this time many residents also volunteered their time working at Fort Knox alongside soldiers/civilians who vacated those facilities after hostilities ceased. In recent decades there has been considerable redevelopment taking place within Lower Arlington due primarily to its location adjacent Columbus OH jobs corridor with numerous high-end housing developments springing up along South Market Street across from Terminal Tower IMAX theater complex although much progress has yetto be made towards restoring deteriorating infrastructure such as potholes that have caused extensive damage over time; meanwhile crime rates continue improve albeit slowly given access restrictions placed on areas surrounding Terminal Tower complex since 2005 affecting mostly commercial properties situated just east off South Market Street near US 11 entrance into downtown Columbus OH . Finally despite some mixed results various resident initiatives such as banning smoking lounges inside terminals have helped achieve some locally implemented successes although ongoing implementation remains uneven
Upper Arlington began as a small Indian village located in the present day town of Harrisonburg, Virginia. The first European to visit Upper Arlington was Captain John Smith in 1607, and he named it after his home village of Arthursville, Pennsylvania. In 1781, the United States Congress passed an act authorizing the erection of a fort at Upper Arlington to protect U.S. settlers in Harrisonburg from British forces. The fort was built by Colonel George Washington and garrisoned by federal soldiers until 1814 when it was abandoned due to military threats from Canada. In 1815, Lower Arlington became part of Harrisonburg and was renamed for General James K. Polk, who had served as a general during the Mexican-American War and later as president of the United States. In 1861, Confederate forces burned Lower Arlington down while Union troops were inside; this event is considered to be the beginning of the Civil War in America. After the war ended in 1865, Lower Arlington returned to its original name and continued to serve as a commercial center for southwestern Ohio until 1991 when it merged with Union City into one community called Upper Arlington
