In 1919, the Ohio Oil & Gas Company opened its oil refinery in Lower Arlington. This refinery produced gasoline and other petroleum products. During World War II, Upper Arlington served as a manufacturing center for munitions production. This included producing aircraft parts and missiles. After the war, upper Arlington experienced a growth period that led to it becoming one of America's most populous cities. Upper Arlington is a small town in the western part of Ohio, located on the west side of the Maumee River. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. Upper Arlington is one of eight towns in Medina County and one of fifteen towns in Lucas County. Its name means "upper" because it is upstream from where the confluence of the Maumee and Muskingum Rivers joins. The first settler in what would become Upper Arlington was John Wilkinson who platted land east of present-day Lower Arlington on March 7, 1792. Wilkinson's plat included a township that would later be named for him and his wife Susannah Wilkinson: Lower Arlington Township. On February 8, 1801, John Wilkinson sold his holdings to Christopher Ladd who established himself as an innkeeper and fur trader near modern-day Lisbon Road and Park Avenue. Ladd's establishment became known as Upper Arlington Inn (later renamed tha Marriott Hotel). In 1825, Daniel Freeman bought Ladd's inn and developed it into a gristmill which soon began producing flour for local farmers; this mill continued operation until 1907 when it was destroyed by a fire. In 1831, George Stephenson built a sawmill just downstream from Upper Arlington Inn on current-day West Side Drive to supply mills along the river with lumber needed for construction projects across Ohio including but not limited to Cleveland’s city limits. The sawmill continued operations until 1906 when it also burned down due to careless use of logs by employees during layering boughs onto rafts used for flooding purposes downstream at what is now Cuyahoga Falls Municipal Water Treatment Plant. In 1865, John Knoppers donated land north of present day Southfield Road between East Main Street and Newtown Creek for use as an agricultural college called Northern Illinois University - now DePaul University - which eventually opened its doors in 1888 under president Abraham Lincoln as Northwestern College (later Urbana-Champaign University). In 1898, Ulysses S Grant visited Northwestern during his visit to Columbus and purchased some property adjacent to DePaul Stadium – later renamed US Grant Presidential Library – which still stands today within walking distance of upper Arlington Elementary Schoolage students currently using that same parkland! A post office has been established at Upper Arlington since November 3rd 1800 by Amos Kendall with Pemberton Post Office ZIP code 47834 although mail service had ceased on October 15th 1870 after only three months existence because allriver cablevision had cut off their connection! The first school opened up here about Kindergarten age back then too...it being Ursula Lane Schoolhouse which still standin' today right next door ta our elementary schoolza kids!
