Upper Arlington is a town in Logan County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. Upper Arlington is located on the Scioto River and is bordered to the north by Cleveland Heights and to the east by Mentor. The first permanent settler in Upper Arlington was David Brown in 1792. In 1814, John Fenton bought of land from David Brown and erected a log cabin on what is now West Third Street. He named his new community Upper Arlington after nearby Arlington County, Virginia. The first post office was established in this community on July 8, 1814. In 1825, James Minton acquired of land from John Fenton and erected a frame house on North Fourth Street near Woodstock Avenue. He called his new settlement Middleboro after Middlebury Township in western New Jersey where he resided for many years before moving to Ohio. In 1830, he sold his land to Jno Atherton who renamed it Upper Arlington because of its elevation above sea level as compared with other local townships within Logan County at that time. A contract for the construction of a canal connecting Lake Erie to the Scioto River was awarded to George Stephenson in 1798 but no construction started until 1800 due to funding shortages caused by France's War of Independence against Spain. When French troops burned Washington D C., President George Washington had severe criticism for not doing enough to protect American interests when he learned of it; this led him later into being known as "the Father of our Country". The canal was finally completed in 1825 under presidential order following years of effort by James Minton and other landowners involved including Speaker Nicholas-Jacques Conte (1775–1840) who served as Mayor of Philadelphia during that time period On November 16th 1830 Lower Arlington Female Seminary opened her doors with seventy five students under Mrs Jane Higginson’s direction having been founded four years earlier at an expense of $5200 dollars with Men making up only one third their number she became one highly respected women’s college throughout Northeast Ohio teaching daughters despite lackadaisical male counterparts then also enjoying excellent city living privileges which included horse Drawn carriages drawn by two mules pulling an assandola . Mrs Higginson soon retired from management but continued as a teacher receiving annual salary plus board/ room & equipment ‘At present I am greatly beloved & esteemed by all my alumnes particulary’
