By 1830, however, most of what is now Lower Arlington had been annexed by Upper Arlington and it became an independent municipality with its own board of trustees until 1915 when it merged with nearby Dayton to form the Columbus metropolitan area. Some key aspects that have made Upper Arlington such an attractive place to live include its close proximity to downtown Columbus, excellent schools and businesses opportunities, easy access to both transportation options (including Interstate 670) and natural resources (such as forestsed hills), as well as easy access to other parts of Ohio through miles-long shopping malls located within walking distance of numerous local stores and restaurants. Upper Arlington is a small town in central Ohio, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Upper Arlington was founded in 1814 by General George Armstrong Custer and his comrades from the 3rd U.S. Cavalry Regiment as Fort Armstrong. It became a city on December 15, 1907 after being approved by referendum. The name comes from Upper Arlington Heights, a neighborhood of the town that is now part of Cleveland Proper. The first European settlers in what is now Upper Arlington were French traders who arrived in 1788 along the Great Lakes region and traded with Native Americans such as the Wyandot people near present day Erie County, Pennsylvania. In 1814, General George Armstrong Custer's 3rd U.S Cavalry Regiment camped near modern-day Upper Arlington while taking part in an invasion of Canada; when they returned to the United States eight months later they found that Ottawa had ceded all of Ontario to Britain and added Upper Arlington to their holdings under the Treaty of Ghent (1815). As a result of this treaty, most American Indian land east of the Appalachian Mountains became available for white settlement following Canadian independence from Great Britain in 1867; however, much of what is now Lower Arlington remained undeveloped because it lay outside Toronto's limits at that time. In 1907, Lower Arlington's first mayor was Jeptha Meeks and its first commissioner was John Prentice; both men were elected on tickets opposing New York City Mayor William Fenton who also served as Commissioner for Justice and Police Department until 1909 when he ran for office against Meeks; although Fenton won by a wide margin he conceded defeat because he realized that running for office would give him more access to money than other citizens had which could be used towards political campaigns or bettering his connections within New York City government On December 15th 1907 Lower Arlington voted to become a city after being approved by referendum taking into account concerns raised about high taxes levied on residents living within city limits which made it difficult for them to afford basic services such as police protection or infrastructure improvements required for becoming an official city Today Upper Arlington has many business districts including downtown where one can find numerous restaurants, bars and retailers
The first Europeans to visit Upper Arlington were the French in 1764. The area was part of the Northwest Territory and at that time, it was considered a frontier region. The area became known for its fertile land, which helped make it a popular destination for settlers. By 1810, Upper Arlington had become an incorporated community and was home to around 350 residents. It experienced significant growth during the 19th century as factories began to be built in the area and people from all over started moving into the town. In 1908, Upper Arlington became one of the first communities in Ohio to be made up entirely of women when Mrs. Anna Maria Hiller incorporated the community.
