In 1795, a group of Revolutionary War veterans from Upper Arlington, Ohio founded the First Continental Congress in what is now Philadelphia. In 1801, the first sawmill in Upper Arlington was built. In 1814, the first store was opened in Upper Arlington. In 1840, the first railroad station was built in Upper Arlington. On October 15, 1951, Lower Arlington High School opened its doors after years of planning and fundraising by students and local citizens.
Upper Arlington is a small town in the western part of Ohio, located on the shore of Lake Erie. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1796 by settlers from Pennsylvania who moved to what is now Upper Arlington after a land grant was given them by George Washington. The name originated with Captain Jonathan Armitage, who named it for his home in London. At first the settlement consisted of just a few homes and a mill, but it soon grew into a fashionable community with schools and businesses. By 1830 Upper Arlington had over 1,200 residents and included three churches – one Presbyterian and two Methodist – as well as several shops and taverns. In 1857 Upper Arlington became part of the newly formed Cuyahoga County when that area was divided between Cleveland and Akron. Over time many new subdivisions were developed within Upper Arlington including Farmington Hills (1940), North Olmsted (1948), Willowbrook (1965), Midtown Crossing (1990) and even Lower Arlington (2005). Today’s core has remained largely unchanged since its founding except for some minor updates such as installation of streetlights in 1984. Today’s economy is based primarily on education, health care, manufacturing and agriculture; however there are also some small businesses that have grown significantly over recent years such as Amazon Web Services or PNC Bank which occupy large buildings near Interstate 495 in downtown Lower Arlington. Upper Arlington is a city in the Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 30,702 at the 2010 census. Upper Arlington is located on the southern border of Cleveland and is bordered by Euclid to the north, Lake Erie to the east, and Medina to the south. It is considered a downtown area with many businesses in its central business district. The first European settlers in what is now Upper Arlington were Irish farmers who arrived in 1795 from County Clare. In 1812 they founded what became Upper Arlington as part of a larger community ofIrish Americans that included Celina and other towns west of Cleveland on Lake Erie's southern shore. From 1825 until it merged with Cleveland in 1907, Upper Arlington was policed by three separate emergency officers: one for law enforcement within Cleveland's boundaries and two for patrols outside them. Each officer patrolled an area equivalent to about 1 square mile (0.6 sq km). In 1837 Lower Arlington was organized as a town when parts of Euclid Township became available following annexation by Cleveland from Lucas County. That same year hydraulic fracturing began operations near Hillyard Field on Sandusky Bayou inside today's Ulmer Park neighborhood and led to increased development around those fracked wells; this prompted upper-arlingtonians to nickname their town " frackingville". The name change did not stick long though -Lower Arlington reverted back to its original name after Frackingville disbanded in 1975 During World War II much of what exists today as Lower Arlington was developed as an airfield serving Akron/Canton Airport which served both Luftwaffe fighter bombers flown out of Akron Municipal Airport as well as American B-24 Liberators used for strategic bombardment against Japanese targets during the war effort In 1957 UAH opened its own graduate school -Ohio State University-in what would become known as Campus Village adjacent to UAH’s main campus buildings Today there are over 100 colleges and universities affiliated with Ohio State University located in or near Campus Village
Upper Arlington was founded in 1795 as a small village on the Scioto River. The first post office was opened in 1812, and the first school was built in 1814. In 1830, Upper Arlington became part of the newly created Township of Bedford. In 1836, the township was divided into two sections, Upper Arlington and Bedford. Upper Arlington continued to be part of Bedford until 1900. In 1907, a new bridge replaced the original one that connected Lower Arlington to Bedford. The new bridge had an arched opening and it sat on a stone foundation. It is now known as Lower Arlington Bridge. In 1916, Upper Arlington became a city when it merged with Bedford. The merger happened because both towns were experiencing growth and needed more money to support their growing populations. At its peak, Upper Arlington had around 45,000 residents and Bedford had around 30,000 residents.
