Upper Arlington is a village in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,253 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. Upper Arlington is located on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River and includes most of what are now Eckstein Township, parts of Summit Township and Warren Township. The village began as a small frontier settlement by colonists who moved from Great Britain in 1788 to seek new land west of the Allegheny Mountains. They named their new community after George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate on which they had landed. In 1814, when Ohio became a state, Upper Arlington became part of Vandalia Township due to its location on the border between Cuyahoga and Vandalia counties. In 1881, much of Upper Arlington was annexed by the larger city of Cleveland as part of a municipal consolidation effort that followed rapid growth in Cleveland during the late 19th century. In 1907-8 Lower Arlington incorporated as an independent town within Cleveland proper; it was reincorporated again in 1959. Upper Arlington has experienced significant economic development over its history; it has been home to two major steel mills (Eckstein Steel and JSW Steel), two large hospitals (Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals), several small businesses (the Eckstein Bakery and grocery store chain) as well as many colleges and universities including Case Western Reserve University, Lake View College/University Heights School District #2 and Youngstown State University campus). The population peaked at 10,000 in 1960 but declined rapidly before rebounding slightly in 2000 to just under 7,000 today. A number of cultural attractions have been developed around Upper Arlington such as Bellevue Park which offers baseball and softball games for children aged 4-11 years old while also hosting educational events such as art shows, poetry readings or concerts; Lower Arlington also features a library with more than 20 branches across Northeast Ohio

On December 12, 1922, Upper Arlington formed one of two townships (the other being South Park) within the newly created Delaware Township on the edge of the city of Toledo. This change brought about significant changes to the community; most notably an increase in housing prices which has caused some residents to leave Lower Arlington for more affordable living options.
Upper Arlington was founded in 1795 as a part of the Northwest Territory. The town was named for General Sir George Upper, who had led an unsuccessful attempt to purchase Ohio from the Indians in 1794. In 1802, Upper Arlington became a township and in 1827 it became a village. On November 1, 1830, Upper Arlington became the seat of government for Hamilton County.
