Upper Arlington, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and is the seat of Arlington County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,936. It lies at the confluence of two large rivers, the Maumee and Cuyahoga. Upper Arlington was first settled by German settlers in 1795 and incorporated as a town on April 15, 1825. The name may be derived from an early settler's location near where he built his cabin - a clearing about one-half mile wide and extending for some nine miles along both banks of the Cuyahoga River - now part of downtown Cleveland. The land where Upper Arlington now sits was first mapped out by John Seidel in 1796 while serving as surveyor for Northwest Territory. The village site lay within what would become Hamilton Township, but it wasn't until 1800 that William Richardson moved to what is today Lower Arlington and started development there on land that had been part of Defiance Township since 1785 (the same year that Cincinnati was founded). In 1802, Richardson donated portions of his farmstead to Lower Arlington residents in memory of his wife Hannah who had died only six weeks prior; her remains were interred next to those on Richardson's property until their removal in 1906 for reinterment at Mount Hope Cemetery nearby. By 1826 Upper Arlington consisted of a few homes and four stores; its population had swollen by several hundred from just over fifty residents when it incorporation occurred three years earlier due largely to farmland purchases by local farmers during President James Ketchum's agricultural depression era reforms which targeted speculators buying neglected rural properties with plans to turn them into thriving farms or townships subject to farmer control like those around Lima – then uppermost among Ohio's "mixed" commercial cities – status quo be damned! In 1812, Upper Arlington became the county seat for Franklin County. On July 1, 1840, Upper Arlington was annexed by the city of Dayton. On February 24, 1871, Lower Arlington was created from parts of Upper Arlington and Dayton.
